Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, published its quarterly statistical report for the third quarter of 2016, which includes disaggregated information on the behavior of the Telecommunications and Broadcasting (T&R) sectors in the country.
As of September 2016, the T&R sectors accounted for 3.6% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with annual growth of more than 13%. Likewise, during the reference period both sectors contributed more than 275 thousand jobs in the country.
The data that can be consulted in the quarterly report correspond to fixed and mobile telephony, fixed and mobile broadband, restricted television, income and profit in the telecommunications sector, international comparisons, in addition to rating, proportion of televisions and radios on audiovisual content, among others.
The following data stand out in the report for the third quarter of the year:
Fixed telecommunications
In the restricted television market:
• Residential restricted TELEVISION penetration was 62 subscriptions per 100 households.
• Subscriptions grew by more than 17% compared to Q3-2015.
• 58% of subscriptions are satellite and 42% by cable.
In the fixed telephony market:
• Fixed telephone penetration was 58 lines per 100 households.
• The penetration of public telephony was 6 lines per 1 thousand inhabitants.
In the Fixed Broadband (BAF) market:
• BAF penetration was 47 subscriptions per 100 households.
• Subscriptions grew 16% compared to Q3-2015.
• 75% of subscriptions had advertised speeds of 10 Mbps or higher.
Mobile telecommunications
In the mobile phone market:
• Nationwide there are 90 mobile phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.
• MVNOs continue to gain ground by reaching more than 1 million mobile phone subscriptions.
• Maxcom is the first operator to offer quadruple play services in Mexico, which is evidence that technological convergence is beginning to materialize in the country.
In the Mobile Broadband market:
• Nationwide there are 58 Mobile Broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.
• Subscriptions grew by almost 24% compared to Q3 - 2015.
Revenues and margins from the telecommunications sector:
• The telecommunications sector generated more than 112 billion pesos of revenue.
• Revenues from mobile operators accounted for 54% of the total.
• The telecommunications sector generated a profit margin of almost 20%.
It should be noted that in the report corresponding to the third quarter of 2016 you can also consult the section Panorama of Television and Radio Consumption, in which it is observed that the proportion of people with televisions on average was 13.38% and its maximum was reached between 21:30 and 22:00 hours when it reached more than 28%; while the proportion of people with the radio on average was 7.3% and its maximum was reached between 10:00 and 10:30 hours when it reached more than 14%.
