Chile. 50 percent of the citizen complaints of gender violence received by the National Television Council in 2016 correspond to intimate partner violence and domestic violence.
In the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the first booklet with "Recommendations for the media treatment of girls and women victims of violence" was released this morning by the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity, the National Television Council and the Victim Assistance Network of the Ministry of the Interior.
"We want the media, especially television, to help ensure that the media treatment of girls and women victims of violence is not even more cruel. With this booklet we want to make visible and show the different forms of physical, psychological, sexual, economic and patrimonial violence as a crime, a violation of human rights and a public problem, of all, "said the president of the National Television Council, Oscar Reyes.
Of the 1065 complaints processed by the CNTV between January and October of this year, 168 correspond to the issue of gender violence. Of this total number of complaints processed by gender, 50% correspond to intimate partner violence and domestic violence.
Among the complaints received for gender violence, most correspond to reality show programs, followed by orientation programs, television series and fiction programs.
According to the surveys of the National Television Council, 35% of respondents believe that the fear and anguish of the victims is the element that the central newscasts use the most when presenting cases of violence against women.
"Cultural change depends on everyone, including the media, to report truthfully, accurately, responsibly and putting the concepts that must be put when we talk about gender violence," said the Minister of the General Secretariat of Government, Paula Narváez.
"As the National Television Council, we are constantly reminding that special attention should be paid to this issue by avoiding euphemisms to describe the victims, violent scenes and ignore their wishes," added the President of the National Television Council.
This year the CNTV together with the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity, the Network of Attention to Victims of the Ministry of the Interior and representatives of open television channels, signed an agreement to display on the screen the number 800-104-008 for the dissemination of information on cases of femicide or frustrated femicide.
According to the eighth National Television Survey, newscasts are the most critical on free-to-air television for violating the dignity of the person, respect or violence against women.
