Brazil. The new music video by singer-songwriter Ivete Sangalo, winner of several Latin Grammy Awards, was filmed with a 360° virtual reality camera, while the color grading was done with the DaVinci Resolve 12 Studio program. The audiovisual material of the song "O farol", released in December 2015, was the singer's first in more than ten years.
O2 Filmes is the largest production and post-production studio in Brazil, recognized for the creation of a wide range of feature films, television programs and advertising campaigns around the world. Through DaVinci Resolve Studio, its color grading tool par excellence, and under the direction of Paulo Barcellos, manager of the post-production area, the material was completed in just two weeks.
"To obtain 360° images, we used four cameras, which involved a formidable amount of material and delayed the post-production process," Barcellos explained. "Thanks to the network rendering feature offered by DaVinci Resolve Studio, we were able to divide the images between different computers. Otherwise, it would have taken us more than five minutes to render each frame. The program allowed us to streamline the work extraordinarily and meet our two-week deadline."
On the other hand, DaVinci Resolve Studio simplified the task of matching the shots captured by the four cameras without major problems. In turn, the chromatic matching function allowed to predetermine the balance parameters automatically, so that all the images retained the same appearance and could be joined together to create a perfect 360° image, regardless of the angle of capture.
To create a virtual reality video clip that gave the viewer the feeling of being in the studio with Ivete Sangalo, the production company worked with flat images that then had to be joined together to generate a 360° view. As a result, a material with a strange aspect ratio, distinct from the commonly accepted standard format, was obtained. Luckily for Barcellos, DaVinci Resolve Studio worked perfectly and seamlessly.
Currently, the studio is working on a "flat" version of the video, which will be distributed to broadcasters and other platforms that do not have technology compatible with 360° images.
O2 Filmes' facilities in São Paulo cover an area of 8500 m² and have more than 70 work terminals in which DaVinci Resolve Studio is used to carry out professional editing and color grading processes. The company's extensive client list includes high-level projects that attract renowned independent publishers from all over the country.
