Caracol TV has equipped its news studio with a spectacular curved video wall from Christie MicroTiles, Christie's revolutionary modular digital display technology. The screen consists of 120 MicroTiles in a configuration of 15 x 8 and has been installed by the company AVCOM.
The Videowall of Caracol TV is six meters wide by 2.5 high, a curvature angle of 0.8 degrees and provides 46,656,000 pixels. It is located on the right side of the news set of this network and is used to show the typical contents of the newscasts, such as camera signals, graphics, clips, logos and live signals.
The images are launched from a Vizrt Viz Engine system, while two ECUs (MicroTiles External Control Unit) distribute the contents on the videowall and offer system level control, as well as automatic calibration and monitoring of the entire screen.
"The first time we saw microTiles modules was at NAB in 2014," recalls Camilo Aranguren, director of AVCOM Colombia, a provider of technological solutions for the television, professional audio and lighting market that has offices in Miami, Caracas and Bogotá.
"From that moment we knew that this product was what Caracol TV was looking for since due to the size of the MicroTiles it was the system that best suited the possibility of making a curved screen without edges. It's a system that provides great image quality and extraordinary color and brightness," adds Aranguren.
Combining the best of DLP projection and LED technology, Christie MicroTiles is able to deliver images of significantly higher brightness and a much wider colour palette than conventional flat-screen plasma and LCD displays. As there is virtually no limit to the number of cubes on a screen, Christie MicroTiles can generate a virtually continuous display wall.
In addition, the lightness (9.2 kg) and shallow depth (260 mm) of the MicroTiles cubes allows flexible installations that integrate perfectly into any environment, being able to adapt even in TV studios with greater space restrictions.
"MicroTiles are ideal for mounting creative sets on TV sets, as they can be stacked and grouped into the most innovative shapes and sizes, and redesigned later to create entirely new configurations," says Jorge Garcia, Christie's Sales Manager in Latin America. In addition, they offer the assurance that they are always ready to emit in seconds, since their permanent automatic calibration means that they do not need specialized settings to see clearly on the screen.
