HBO Latin America will expand its offer of HD channels with Intelsat

Latin America. Intelsat and HBO Latin America Group signed a new comprehensive satellite distribution agreement that will optimize its reach throughout Latin America.

Under the new multi-year multi-transponder contract, HBO LAG will now use capacity in three of Intelsat's major satellite video communities to distribute its programming to cable, DTH and IPTV service providers throughout Latin America. Intelsat will also provide HBO LAG with a streaming restoration service through its IntelsatOneSM terrestrial network, and its teleports in Ellenwood, Georgia, and Riverside, California.

The three video communities made up of the  Intelsat 21 at 302°E, the Intelsat 11 at 317°E and, after its scheduled launch in 2015, the Intelsat 34 at 304.5°E, will allow HBO LAG to increase its offer of high-definition channels and provide access to millions of viewers throughout Latin America.

According to Emilio Otermin, Senior Vice President of Technology and Operations at HBO LAG, "Providing high-quality programming to the Latin American and Brazilian markets is an essential element of HBO LAG's mission, and Intelsat's video communities offer unparalleled distribution and reach. Our distribution network through Intelsat will provide HBO LAG with greater coverage and redundancy, thereby facilitating the penetration of cable headers and improving our business opportunities in this burgeoning region."

In the words of Carmen González-Sanfeliú, Vice President of Intelsat for Latin America and the Caribbean, "HBO LAG had very specific goals in terms of its distribution in the Latin American region, starting with optimizing its reach and enhancing its operational performance. Together with the Intelsat 21 and Intelsat 11 satellites, the Intelsat 34 will reach millions of viewers; with nearly 700 channels, including more than 60 in high definition and around 80 of Latin America's top 100 on-demand television channels, making our Latin American video communities the most powerful in the region."
