International. In 2011 the profits generated by satellite pay television reached US $ 90,000 million and by 2021 this figure is expected to reach US $ 150,000 million, according to a report by the firm Euroconsult.
This upward trend is driven by so-called emerging markets such as Latin America, Central Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, which represent a very important source of income, which, in addition, will double in the coming years to become responsible for 44% of the profits generated by 2021.
"Emerging regions will see further growth in subscriber numbers in the future, as mature markets focus more on increasing profitability," the report said.
Among the other figures released by the report, it highlights that the number of satellite platforms grew in 2011 to reach 140 worldwide, for a reach of 184 million subscribers. According to forecasts, by 2021 this number will stand at 350 million households.
This is based on the average growth of the sector, which has remained at 10% per year during the last decade. The trend continued in 2011, during which time subscriptions increased by 16%.
