Mexico. According to the latest data reported by the Federal Telecommunications Commission, Cofetel, in 2011 cable television lost the lead it had always had and satellite television surpassed it for the first time in number of subscribers.
The satellite signal ended the year with 5.64 million users, with an increase of 29.3%, while cable television reached 5.59 million subscribers, achieving a slight increase compared to the previous year.
The entity highlights in its report that in general the growth of subscription television reached 13.76%, with 11.45 million users. In addition, the investment of the companies that provide the subscription television service in Mexico reached IN 2011 US$840.7 million, with a decrease of 21%.
In addition, it points out that microwave television decreased by 32.4%, concluding 2011 with 215,700 users. Cofetel explains that this result was due to the fact that the concessionaires that can technically offer this service and that of satellite television, have focused their commercial strategies towards the growth of the latter.
The report also shows internet penetration in Mexico. Last year ended with 40.6 million users, of these, 20.78 million were households and 20.52 million outside. Overall, internet penetration was 36.5 subscribers per 100 inhabitants.
