Brazil. To comply with the provisions of the new pay television law, sanctioned on September 13 by the president of Brazil Dilma Rousseff, content producers will not be able to have stakes in the distribution sector greater than 50% of the capital.
Likewise, the channels will have to broadcast three and a half hours a week of content of Brazilian production in prime time, including an educational channel, a university channel, another of a sector to be chosen and the channels of the Judiciary, the Executive Branch and the two chambers of Congress.
In addition to imposing quotas for the broadcast of domestic content, the law also removes restrictions on distributors of foreign origin. From the sanction of the president, foreign companies that until now could not control pay TELEVISION distributors, will be able to own all the share capital of these companies.
However, the rule introduces restrictions for channel owners and content producers, these companies will have to be controlled by Brazilians and have a maximum of 30% foreign participation, according to the EFE news agency.
Compliance with the new rule will be supervised by the National Film Agency (Ancine), which will have the ability to fine and even withdraw licenses in case of non-compliance with the established parameters.
