Mexico. With the announcement of the new company Totalplay, TV Azteca and Televisa sealed their alliance to compete with Telmex in the quadrupe play market (audio, video, Internet and mobile telephony) in Mexico.
The company that in the first stage will be in the Federal District and in the state of Toluca, will offer fixed and cellular telephony through the 4G network of the Iusacell Group, connection of 100 megabytes on the Internet, both for homes and for businesses and television in high definition (HD) with 250 channels.
For Ricardo Salinas, president of Grupo Salinas, owner of TV Azteca, "most of this investment has already been made in the laying of the fiber optic network where it is believed is the key to the success of the product. Thus, from the screen, the user will be able to watch television, chat, be connected, order food services, talk and receive calls from both cell phones and landlines."
However, despite the US$7 billion initially invested by the subsidiaries, coverage will be reduced in the coming years. "In 2011 we will reach only 100,000 households and in 2012 about 300,000, a fairly modest figure if we compare it with the 12 million telephone lines that Telmex has and the 7.57 million broadband Internet customers," Salinas added.
However, the company brings a new concept, according to its CEO, Samer Salameh. "Totalplay is the first service in Mexico that is merging two technologies, telecommunications with entertainment, thus creating the concept of informative entertainment, infotainment."
