FIAF, the International Federation of Film Archives, brings together the most important institutions dedicated to the safeguarding of moving images and the defense of film heritage as a form of artistic expression of the twentieth century. Its task is to recover, collect, preserve and project moving images, considered as works of art and cultural expression and as historical documents.
When it was founded in 1938, FIAF had four members. Today it brings together more than 120 institutions belonging to more than 65 countries, reflecting the importance that has been acquiring the preservation of the heritage of moving images worldwide.
The objectives of FIAF
- Establish a code of ethics for film preservation and practical standards for all areas of the work of an archive
- Promote the improvement of the legal context in which the archives carry out their work
- Promote film culture and facilitate historical research nationally and internationally
- Develop training and improvement programs in preservation and other archival techniques
- Ensure permanent access of the interested public to the collections, for study and research purposes
- Promote the collection and preservation of documents and other materials related to cinema
- Encourage cooperation between members with a view to ensuring the availability of films and documents at international level
FIAF affiliates
FiAF members are the archives dedicated to the collection, cataloguing, preservation and restoration of films and documents relating to cinema. The current members represent different types of institutions: official archives, private foundations and independent associations, cinematheques, museums and university departments.
