Televid is a channel of the city of Medellín that has managed to position itself among a senior, adult female audience. In 2000 it began operations as Televida, a local channel of open signal and today, after changing its name and delivering the open signal license, it has achieved significant growth in its specific niche thanks to cable operators and, above all, digital platforms.
Juan Carlos Greiffenstein, CEO of Televid, explained that the channel has always been dependent on subscription television operators, which has made it difficult for them because sometimes it is not easy for them to be included in the grid. But with the Youtube channel they have managed to reach many audiences, even abroad, especially in the United States and Mexico.
"The issue of technology must obey the strategy of the Canal. In our case, the strategy is focused, in terms of coverage and impact to the audience, towards internet television, VoD. For almost two years we have been strengthening the Channel on Youtube. After Caracol Televisión, we are the second channel with the highest number of subscribers," he said.
This is an interesting fact if you take into account the niche to which Televid is directed. Only the previous year they had 27.4 million reproductions and add up to more than 44 million reproductions in a year and a half. Based on this data, the investment in technology is focused on the digital area, in addition to the traditional channel.
Obeying the niche of the Canal, digital solutions are simple, because its audience is usually afraid of technology and abandons it if it is complex. In the programming they explain how to access digital platforms in a simple and elementary way. They currently have an incipient application that solves a problem, live steraming. They plan to include new options in the future.
No open signal license
When it came time to renew the transmission technology to adopt the digital television model, Televid did several audience analyses to measure the open signal and the impact was minimal, resulting in the January 15, 2017 turning off the analog transmitter signal and delivering the open signal license. In addition, according to Juan Carlos Greiffenstein, they felt that there was a disincentive on the part of the government. They didn't have any support, they only existed to sanction them.
Alejandro Múnera, head of production and transmission of the Canal, said that currently the heavy-duty structure is consolidated and they are focused on developing other lines of action such as field work and reporting, as well as solutions that can be scaled.
Because of their contents, they are interested in moving to other sites to attend events that comply with the religious orientation of the Canal, such as pilgrimages, pilgrimages and religious trips to other countries, for which they require very light production and transmission structures, small cameras and even cell phones, streaming servers, among others.
"For this model of work and production, we would like to have professionals who leave the university with the ability to make the whole product: to record it, edit it, do previous research and deliver finished product. A person who understands the entire spectrum of the production chain and works with very light structures, being flexible and very skilled," said Televid's head of production and transmission.
In HD the Channel has production and transmission by fiber to a subscription TV operator. The pending task is HD satellite transmission. In fact, they are reassessing the continuity of the satellite signal.
Finally, Alejandro Múnera stressed that among the projects that are pending is the easing of production structures; consolidate the file theme, for which they have an LTO system but connected to a single server that must support the entire operation; and renew the Lighting by LED technology.
