The Hoodman Alternative Memory Adapter allows you to use cards SDHC in applications that require Sony SxS cards, such as the recording of material encamcorders XDCAM-EX. In essence it is a passive adapter in the form of an SxS card that includes a slot for an ordinary SD card. Once it has been recorded material this can be read using the adapter or simply removing the SD card and inserting it into any reading device.
The manufacturer warns that it only guarantees correct performance of the adapter if you use your own SDHC cards, although it does the except that it is not possible to register material in the recording that demands an extraordinarily high data rate high, like 1080i/1080p with overcranking.
Recently we had a chance to try one of these adapters, and it worked exactly as advertised. We fell into the inevitable temptation to use a third-party SDHC card, and it didn't work. We compare it to an adapter generic of Chinese origin, which also did not work, even with hoodman's SDHC card. The adapter costs around US$50, an amount that rises to about US$140 if purchased together with a 16GB SDHC card.
