Harris Corporation announced recently than the three largest radio networks in Brazil, Rádio Bandeirantes, Rádio Globo and Brupo RBS, selected it as exclusive supplier of digital transmitters.
The HD Radio standard will allow the three companies to make simulcast of programs in analog and digital format on the same frequency transmission. This way, listeners will have the option to receive in digital or continue to receive analog signals.
In Argentina, Radio Mitre and Radio Continental are in the same process.
As early as October 2003, Harris had performed HD Radio demonstrations at the CIRT event in Mexico. At Caper 2004, in Argentina, Harris showed this technology by first time in South America.
According to Harris executives, Brazil's decision to adopt a digital system influence the decision of neighbouring countries to take greater knowledge of the different levels of digital radio currently existing and examine in greater depth the countless benefits provided by migration.
Among other advantages, the standard HD Radio allows multichannel transmissions by the same frequency as well as incorporating channels for transmission of data.
At the insistence of journalists Brazilians at a recent press conference in Sao Paulo, Harris executives recognized that there is possibility, although they refused to confirm it, of establishing a transmitter factory in Brazil to serve the market Latin American. It should be remembered that Harris operated a microwave equipment in this country in the late 90s, which was closed in 2001.
