The National Television Commission of Colombia chose the European DVB T/H system as a standard for developing the Digital Terrestrial Television project of the country.
In this way, Colombia joins the more than one hundred countries of the world that already adopted the standard and, likewise, assumes a new challenge in the implementation of new technologies and advances in the technical aspect and content generation.
The first broadcasts with the new digital signal will be carried out from the second quarter of next year, when it is foreseen that public and private channels of television have advanced in the construction of a network with the new technology in the main cities of the country.
The CNTV estimated the investments at 150 million dollars for the installation of the national and regional public network of digital television, and between 52 million and 60 million dollars for the private network.
The European system was chosen for its mobility, high definition, interactivity and the multiple channels you can offer, explained the CNTV. The standard competed against the American and Japanese standards.
About DVB
Through the open standard for the development of interactive services (MHP), the DVB standard allows you to send to decoders additional information to programming (related to the content or independent of it).
DVB-T/H ensures a lower investment to provide Digital TV Mobile by the use of shared infrastructure with the networks of existing broadcasting and cellular telephony, as well as a lower cost of reception equipment for viewers thanks to the fact that it has already been adopted by more than one hundred countries
With the DVB standard basic equipment (decoders) for digital TV reception can be purchased on the market from US$30.
Technical characteristics of the DVB-TH standard
