AMC Entertainment, a film exhibition company in the United States, will install 4K digital projection systems throughout its movie theater circuit. With 309 theaters and 4,628 screens, AMC will thus be the largest entertainment company equipped with 4K digital technology in the country.
Gerry Lopez, president-CEO of the firm, said when announcing the agreement with Sony to advance the project, that this conversion "is an excellent example of our strong support for the transition of the industry towards a digital platform".
Sony's 4K digital cinematic projection systems being installed at AMC offer the highest image resolution of all available projection technologies. At 8.8 million pixels, 4K provides image resolutions four times higher than those of 2K projection systems and slightly more than four times higher than those of high-definition systems.
Recently, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that it will make and release most of its new productions using 4K technology. Sony is developing a full line of 4K digital film production equipment, including 4K acquisition, storage and post-production systems.
