Peru. During the first quarter of 2025, the General Directorate of Inspections and Sanctions in Communications of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, dismantled 20 illegal broadcasting stations, seizing 44 telecommunications equipment in various operations carried out in Lima and La Libertad.
The interventions were carried out in strategic and difficult-to-access areas, such as the hills of Puente Piedra, San Juan de Lurigancho, Carabayllo and El Agustino, in Metropolitan Lima, as well as in the provinces of Otuzco and Trujillo, in the department of La Libertad.
These operations were carried out in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police of Peru (PNP), within the framework of the MTC's policy of zero tolerance against radio piracy, reaffirming its commitment to legality, security and respect for the rights of the formal.
The illegal use of the radio spectrum not only generates interference that affects the quality of telecommunications services, but also represents a risk to the security of communications in emergency situations. This practice is a crime punishable by up to 8 years in prison and economic penalties of up to 50 UIT (equivalent to S/ 267,500).
Likewise, people or companies that contract advertising in these illegal stations can also be administratively sanctioned, with fines ranging from 10 to 50 UIT (from S/ 53,500 to S/ 267,500).
