Mexico. After a meeting between the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, an investment of one billion dollars was announced to produce series and films in Mexico during 2025-2028.
"It's a Netflix decision. Mexico is so great that they decided to invest here. As they say, it is not only the wealth, but also these stories that are shown, these productions are of Mexican talent. I mean, it's not that they come to... it's not just that they come to a location in Mexico for a production idea that was made somewhere in the world and that is cheap, beautiful, to make, no; it is the creation in Mexico of series for Netflix, that also changes the dynamic a bit," said Claudia Sheinbaum.
He pointed out that this industry will not only allow Mexico to be seen, but also contributes to economic development, tourism and the generation of jobs. "It is really an industry that greatly boosts the economy. It is not only that the world is made known through Netflix series, which is very important that Mexico is seen in the world, but also all the economic development and the number of jobs that are generated, from a production," he added.
He assured that the best way to encourage more investments of this type is to streamline the procedures and permits required for the production of a series, a film and even for the installation of a plant, so he recalled that they are already working with the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency to facilitate any procedure to develop this type of activity.
She recalled that during her administration as Head of Government of Mexico City, all procedures to make films or audiovisuals were reduced; in addition to the fact that there was an increase in the generation of jobs in this industry with a record of 300 thousand jobs.
The CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, stressed that in the coming years with the investment of one billion dollars, it is estimated that around 20 productions will be made per year, which will contribute to the growth of the audiovisual industry, as well as the creation of jobs and opportunities in the country, which promotes the President's vision of a prosperous Mexico.
"President Sheinbaum, at Netflix we share your vision of a vibrant and prosperous Mexico, full of growth and opportunities. And we want to contribute to making it a reality," he said.
He announced that Netflix will continue to promote Mexican talent by investing in programs to develop creativity in the audiovisual industry, as it has done in previous years and will also collaborate with Churubusco Studios to improve their facilities.
He recalled that Netflix has a long history with Mexico that began 10 years ago with the creation of its first production made in Mexico with the series "Club de Cuervos"; in addition to the fact that together transcendental moments in history have been established, such as the Oscar Award for Best Foreign Film with Roma by Alfonso Cuarón and Best Animated Film with Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro.
He stressed that over the years, Netflix has worked in Mexico in 50 locations in 25 years, in addition to collaborating with Mexican creators, such as Mexican artisans who made more than 5 thousand pieces of costumes for the production of "Pedro Páramo" and who were contacted thanks to the realization of the textile meeting "Original", which takes place every year at the "Los Pinos" Cultural Complex and will organize its fifth edition in 2025.
Also present at the meeting were Netflix's Vice President of Latin American Content, Francisco Ramos; Vice President of Latin American Communications at Netflix, Florencia Bianco; and the general director of Communication of the Ministry of Economy, Daniel Millán.
