Colombia. The Colombian television network Canal 1 relies on the Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro model to record the weekly talk show "1 on 1", as well as the daily cooking show "Tú tiene la sazón".
DaVinci Resolve Studio – the company's audio editing, color grading, visual effects (VFX) and post-production software – is used to edit and color grade the software, which is not only broadcast to a national audience but is also available on a variety of social networks.
Founded in Bogotá in 1954, Canal 1 offers its viewers diverse programming that includes news, entertainment and television series. Although the network is state-owned, the programming has been in charge of Plural Comunicaciones since 2017. Recently, Channel 1 premiered "1 a 1", a program presented by the president of the broadcaster, Ramiro Avendaño, in which interviews are conducted with prominent personalities, as well as "Tú tiene la sazón", a cooking program that accompanies viewers in a gastronomic experience in collaboration with the culinary school Gastronomía Mariano Moreno.
To deliver a sophisticated, high-quality viewing experience to broadcast and social media audiences, Channel 1 turned to a workflow based entirely on Blackmagic Design products.
"One of the many reasons we chose these products was their excellent value for money," said Raul Gertel Moreno, an audiovisual engineer at Channel 1. "For us, it was important to stay within budget and not sacrifice the quality that our viewers expect from us. At the same time, we needed devices that both our production and post-production teams could easily integrate into their existing workflows."
To record the programs, the computer has two Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro units. In this sense, Gertel Moreno explained: "Although both programs are filmed in a studio, we needed cameras that were versatile enough that we could take them outdoors when we captured alternative scenes and still provide the same cinematic quality. Not only is the Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro an exceptional studio camera, but it's also easy to move around outdoors thanks to its compact design."
Although the equipment records in 4K resolution, Gertel Moreno pointed out that it was important to have cameras compatible with 6K images, since they offer a guarantee of the future and have Ethernet connections that allow remote filming.
Gertel Moreno and his team also have an ATEM SDI Extreme ISO switcher for studio and field recordings, as well as an ATEM Streaming Bridge converter to transmit the switcher signal over an IP network, and a HyperDeck Studio HD Mini device that records and plays back clips easily and quickly.
He explained: "The mixer is small but powerful, which is ideal for any external project, as it is easy to transport and allows the job to be carried out without problems. In addition, it gives us the ability to stream and record all sources simultaneously with the broadcast program. Being able to produce two quality programs to broadcast on open television without the need for a complex, expensive and difficult to manage work dynamic is a salvation."
During post-production, the team turns to DaVinci Resolve Studio to color grade and edit the programs for transmission on the station's YouTube channel. In addition, some clips are trimmed to be posted on the channel's social media channels to promote the shows.
"The post-production team was able to get started with DaVinci Resolve Studio quickly thanks to its intuitive interface. The learning period was not difficult, and having a program that allows color grading and editing to be carried out simultaneously is a great advantage," said Gertel Moreno. "The image quality we get with the cameras is exceptional, so we only make small colour adjustments to give the programmes a distinctive style. Then, as team members work on the final edit, they can identify the clips they want to use to promote the episode on social media."
The DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor improves the ability to search and crop content. "This keyboard helps the post-production team streamline basic editing processes that can be time-consuming. In addition, we have improved our efficiency, which is essential in programs that are broadcast weekly," he added.
"We are very proud of what we have achieved with Blackmagic Design here at the channel," said Gertel Moreno in closing. "The experience we offer our viewers is top-notch. Both programs have been a great success, and we look forward to starting using these products in other programs very soon."
