Colombia. The Communications Regulation Commission, CRC, presented the 2024 Edition of the Trend Monitoring, which consolidates high-value technical information for the design of policies and measures that favor the growth and adaptation of the ICT, postal or audiovisual industry in Colombia.
The new version of this monitoring presents a global overview and specific application cases that can inspire new initiatives in the country. These findings are the result of an analysis of different relevant sources such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Commission, UNESCO, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) among others, which offer a comprehensive view of the evolution in key sectors.
The report analyzes emerging technologies and their potential impacts, such as:
- The penetration of 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) by 2024, which is led by Saudi Arabia, Austria, Germany, the United States and Australia. While, in Latin America, the leaders are Brazil, Mexico and Chile.
- The standardization process for 6G technology, the final specifications of which are expected to be available between 2028 and 2030.
- The key aspects for the implementation of Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) that will represent between 20% and 30% of the global RAN market by 2028.
- The use of satellites and other non-terrestrial platforms to provide connectivity in remote areas. This evolution poses significant challenges in the quality of the user experience and service offerings, which requires a thorough analysis of the technical and regulatory considerations adopted at the international level.
- The development of the hyperscalable cloud, which plays a crucial role in managing the exponential growth of data generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- International technical standards that are a fundamental piece to ensure that AI systems are developed, implemented and operated in a responsible, safe and ethical way.
- The development of the courier drone market that becomes an alternative to complete the delivery of packages and documents within the framework of the postal sector.
- The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AGI) for text, audio, video, and emotion recognition generation, which allows creators to tailor narratives and audiovisual content to maximize emotional impact and connection with the audience.
Regarding regulatory trends, it is highlighted that:
Significant progress is being made in the deployment of different technologies that allow the expansion of coverage, achieving important advances in coverage and innovative applications.
Different institutions highlight the need to evaluate the information generated by Artificial Intelligence to avoid inaccurate or harmful data, and promote global cooperation in the creation of universal principles for the ethical and responsible development of Artificial Intelligence.
The technological advancement of drones and other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence requires the creation and continuous adjustment of regulations in technical, operational and security aspects, including cybersecurity, to address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that these advances bring.
"The study developed each year by the Commission is a fundamental input to understand and anticipate changes in the ICT, Postal and audiovisual content sectors, to facilitate adaptation to new technologies and trends, maximizing their benefits. Monitoring also allows us to identify challenges and opportunities in regulatory matters, guiding informed decision-making and the development of policies that promote innovation and regulatory improvement for the benefit of these sectors and the country," explained Lina María Duque Del Vecchio, Commissioner and Executive Director of the CRC.
