Sony Future Filmmaker Awards anunció ganadores en 2024

Mexico. Six winners of the second edition of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards were announced, announced during a special ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by Entertainment Tonight correspondent Denny Directo.

Launched by Creo and sponsored by Sony, this major annual short film awards program provides a gateway to the development of exceptional film talent and celebrates filmmakers who offer an original perspective on storytelling.

Chosen by a panel of expert jurors led by Justin Chadwick, the winners of the 2024 Sony Future Filmmaker Awards are as follows: Katie Blair (United States, Fiction), Olawunmi Hassan and Adaobi Samson (Nigeria, Nonfiction), Solmund MacPherson (Canada, Environment), Kyle Novak (Czech Republic, Animation), Raheem Razak (South Africa, Student) and Cristian Daniel (Uruguay, Future Format).

The Latin American representation was led by Cristian Daniel, from Uruguay, who was the winner of the Future Format category for his work PARASOMNIA, which is about a young man who tries to discover a disturbing presence in a dark corridor without knowing what awaits him ahead. This category rewards a new generation of aspiring filmmakers and welcomes short films between 2 and 5 minutes long shot with a smartphone.

Likewise, three Mexicans were placed in the group of shortlisted: Jean Chapiro, in the Non-Fiction category, for his work HASTA ENCONTROS; Natalia Bermúdez, in the Student category, representing the Cinematographic Training Center, for her work APNEA; and Salvador Alejandro Gutiérrez, also in the Student category, representing the IADT of Ireland and in collaboration with Katniss Tung Cheng of Hong Kong, for his work DEBAJO DE LA VENTANA.

As part of the award, this year's winners and shortlisted candidates participated in a week-long industry immersion program, culminating in the awards ceremony. This award offers filmmakers the invaluable opportunity to connect with peers and industry leaders, and gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access. The program includes workshops by Sony Pictures executives on a wide variety of topics ranging from concepts given by leading cinematographers, evaluations and Q&A sessions to perspectives on working with talent agencies and the use of cutting-edge technologies and animation, film rating and music rights.

This year's winners were chosen from 8,400 films by more than 5,000 filmmakers from 148 countries submitted in six categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Environment, Animation, Student and Future Format. The winners were selected by Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, co-founders and co-presidents of Sony Pictures Classics (Call Me By Your Name, The Father, Whiplash); Rob Hardy ASC, BSC, BAFTA Award-winning cinematographer (Civil War, Mission: Impossible: Fallout, Ex Machina) and Kate Reid BSC, acclaimed British cinematographer (Game of Thrones, Great Expectations, Silo), who honor creative excellence and original stories. The winners were chosen from 30 shortlisted filmmakers from a long list by Australian director Unjoo Moon and Emmy-winning cinematographer Robert Primes ASC. Both stages of the judging process were led by award-winning director Justin Chadwick (Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom, The Other Boleyn, Love and Tulips, Shardlake).

After its successful second edition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards will return for a third edition in 2025, registrations will be open from June this year. All creators from around the world are invited to participate in this important opportunity to showcase their talent and exhibit their work internationally.
