The role of women is expanded

Resources, experiences and development programs will provide the first international organization of women in the Pay-TV and telecommunications industry, based in Miami.

The Association of Women in Telecommunications (AMET) was created by a group of industry pioneers in July 1997. Its appearance was the result of the evolution of a demanding and complex market, in which the need to open a common space for women was detected, where they could acquire and develop skills at the same pace of changes.

Since then, the aim of the AMET is to provide a forum for professionals interested in exploring, developing and expanding the role of women, both in the television and telecommunications industries in Latin America.

The entity operates as a non-profit organization, and tries to achieve its goal with the creation of permanent communication channels, which allow its members to share essential information for women.

The executors

The executive committee consists of Karen Davis, chair; Graciela Leombruni and Maggie Castillo. In turn, AMET has specific committees to carry out its objectives (events; editorial, and administration and membership), whose collaborators include colleagues such as Laura Antoniazzo and Jessica Rodríguez.

Karen Davis is a young veteran in the cable world. She approached the media from the exercise of political consulting, which also led her to know Latin America from her Caracas experience of Venezuela.

His time at NBC, HBO, MTV, Cinecanal and The Weather Channel, among others, gave him vast experience in this demanding sector of the industry, which served as the basis for establishing Quack Productions, his own strategic services company for the development and establishment of international TV signals.

The plans

The celebration of NATPE'98 served as a framework for AMET to organize a successful International Breakfast at the Hilton in New Orleans. About thirty participants, including members, representatives of pan-regional channels, independent consultants and the media, enjoyed a meeting introduced by Davis, in which Carlos Muñoz, president of the National TV Commission of Colombia, presented an overview of the changing television structure in his country.

For his part, Davis pointed out the achievements and goals achieved after six months of work of the association and more than 70 members in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the United States and Mexico.

Any member can participate in panels and workshops, connect with all other members across the continent, through the membership directory, and be updated on the association's programs and activities with a quarterly newsletter.

AMET will be at Canitec, Tepal and Cable Jornadas in Buenos Aires. Its executive offices are located in Miami Beach, but the group has two regional divisions, north and south, to offer its services with greater coverage. The north covers the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and the south takes care of the entire South American subregion.
