Screen Relationships: Love Take Care of Me!

altA total of 30 works received the call for the first University Contest that is carried out within the framework of TecnoTelevisión. The innovation in the presentation of the proposed theme left a difficult task for the jurors. An academic look at the works.

By Luis Fernando Gutiérrez*

"Amor pónme cuidado", is a visual and sound constant in each of the videos that students from various universities in the country delivered to the TecnoTelevisión Contest, which in its first version proposed the theme of technology and asked the participants how its daily use or abuse affects, positively or negatively, society. From their subjectivity when expressing university filmmakers from Barranquilla, Medellín, Cali and Bogotá expressed through the video form the phrase "Love put me care".

This phrase becomes a slogan in each of the performances and images presented. The presence of the other is claimed because, as seen in the videos, we inhabit an era characterized by screen relationships that affect social relations and modify the way of being, thinking and acting with the other and with oneself.

Styles and looks
From different genres, styles and perspectives the participants make memory and awareness about the way we live and inhabit the present that, according to what has been viewed- have the clear intention of visually demonstrating how this society disconnects socially losing the possibility of encounter with the other so necessary for the achievement of happiness.

The message of the university students is decisive when they declare with concern the way in which the current man is represented: digitized, isolated and ignored. In the multiple subjectivities and in the desire to narrate, the filmmakers shout to the world that the misuse of tablets, cell phones and other technologies make it grow without the other seeing it and, sometimes the joy or pain produced by living passes by without being seen or is perceived simply by screen mediations that make a distant reality.

Also, melodramatic situations and visual metaphors seen denounce that the "relationships" mediated by technology are dangerous relationships and many of them, connected with nothingness, with the beyond, without any meaning. Connections without any responsibility.

Negative intent prevails
Most of what has been seen has the clear intention of searching for a negative message and evidencing that the misuse we make of technology in our daily lives, except for a single delivery, demonstrate that the present is not being lived with the other, but with the object that is technology turned into an object of desire, of enjoyment and enjoyment and being with the other in person, produces tedium, laziness and non-enjoyment.

More virtual than real
Sound, camera and lighting problems are evident, but the desire to narrate the present leaves the technical aside to worry and focus on what was meant in the 30 productions: This era seems to be more virtual than real. The creativity of the treatment of the theme is valued although it was possible to explore other approaches, aesthetics and styles to the proposed theme. The young man has in himself -being a child of TV and technology- an innate narrative and his own style of expressing himself audiovisually.

With regard to technical quality, the final products presented accredit a good level of sound and visual invoice that approve the broadcasting standards of an open television channel -but as said before- we must think beyond the images and explore more the sounds produced by the environment and music of those places and situations such as loneliness, the danger, the heartbreak and the tedium that the relationship with technology produces.

A look at the technique and concept
Audiovisual narrative manifests the creative use of image and sound. Through innovation, formats and styles of narration are created, although it was possible to experiment more with the search for new genres and formats that the Contest facilitated in the parameters of participation.

Video clips, musicals, stop motion and reports were received from which the university students approached reality and from the dramatization fantasized situations from beyond, movie outings, already known, without any novelty. Always - as I have said - techno-phobic university filmmakers for the isolation effects produced by tablets and cell phones.

Something is going on
New technologies are today necessary tools for the information and training of people, their use promotes participation, debate, transformation and the generation of a participatory and inclusive citizenship, but this is not recorded in the videos.

The TecnoTelevisión Contest – within the framework of the contest that will be held in July and August in Bogotá (Corferias) – becomes an opportunity to reflect on the use and benefit that technology provides to our quality of life, our daily lives and, consequently, our well-being and progress. At the same time, it allows us to reflect on the use and appropriation that can be given to technology for innovation and social benefit, for education, to start new businesses, to improve our quality of life, and the relationship with others.

TecnoTelevisión through this contest is aware of the importance of students as future actors in the television industry, the magazine TV Y VIDEO proposes the TecnoTelevisión University Contest, with the support of the Pontifical Bolivarian University and the Athletic Center of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.

See you at the awards: Let the best win!

Some synopses
In this version came the eyes of university filmmakers from Bogotá, Cali, Medellín and Barranquilla who, thinking about the theme of the contest, wished to participate and tell the present, the here and now from their vision and intention. Here is a look at the synopses that allow us to determine the places, actions and characters that are part of each of the stories and the relationship that university students make, between technology and everyday life and their effects.

Does technology affect us?
In a society where technology has become an indispensable part of life, we begin to see how this great attachment is affecting them, both children, young people and adults, reaching a point where they get involved in it and it is impossible for them to get out.

Love, whatsapp?
Society has been revolutionized thanks to technological advances, so much so that it has led to interpersonal relationships being affected as is the case with this story, in which a love relationship is affected by the misuse of technology.

Buecnomalia
A great surprise is Tony with his great friend who met online, and more surprised is to be transferred in spirit by God to some situations where he shows him that some things can be good or bad and that it depends on how they are used.

Slave of technology
A young woman addicted to technology, because she is always aware of her cell phone, forgets about the people around her and the important moments of her life.

PIN communication
A couple of boyfriends constantly communicates by their PIN. This medium seems to bring them closer and make the one know what is constantly happening in the life of the other, but apparently an abysmal distance is generated and the question arises: Do they really know each other?

Faces of technology
Through an urban genre song "Rap", a call is made for sanity and good use of technological tools, especially black Berry and smart mobile phones. At the same time, the story of a character addicted to these technological artifacts at various stages of his life is exposed.

Entertain, Ruben and Fredy
Two dissonant characters who in the daily journey of their lives are rubbed shoulders, suddenly, by three media that adopt the female figure; its fine and delicate curves are the key tool to undertake the seduction of both characters and try to intensify it.

Connected to life
In today's world that completely absorbs us and family ties tend to weaken more and more, a girl uses a traditional means of communication, the letter, to express her feelings to her absorbed and evicted mother. He remembers moments lived and even say goodbye to her.

Now I am a legend
Susi is a doll that eats, sleeps and plays with its owner Alejandra. Life for the two of them is pink, until November 2 on their birthday, a gift changes their life.  Disappointment, melancholy and death come together to end the interrelationship they have always had. Seven years later, the colors return, not to interrelate a feeling, but a compulsive need for the future.

Virtual reality
In the virtual era we are currently living in, we lose track of reality and virtuality, as if they were two different scenarios. But technology, no matter how evolved it is, will always be an instrument available to human intentions, the gap between the digital and the real is a mirage, it does not exist. This short film shows us how reality and the virtual world paradoxically come together to lead to a unique and real fact.

404 Error
In 2020 in a bar in South America, transnational gaps have taken a back seat. The creation of the alter ego in virtual media has made it possible to create new scenarios and social realities. The payment for going to parties and bars around the world through remote internet connections is a recurring one, bodies have largely become obsolete for personal realities. Such dependence on the network conditions the existence of the people who connect in this bar to the attachment to the connection and the availability of the file on the network, it reminds us that we are not yet owners or real in the network, the error 404 continues to prevail in it.
