CNTV presented study on free-to-air TV consumption

Chile. Newscasts are the most watched programs during the first half of 2017 with 28% of preferences and telenovelas rank second with 21.8%. According to the Statistical Report, prepared by the Department of Studies of the National Television Council, which provides information on the various dynamics of television programming present in the year.

The consumption of telenovelas ranked second in the preferences of the audience during the first half of the current year. This genre, like the news, presents a significant effectiveness in relation to its offer. The offer of telenovelas is in fourth place in relation to other genres with 13.2%, however, it is positioned as the second most consumed type of program during the period analyzed.

On the other hand, miscellaneous are positioned in the third place of the most consumed genres in 2017, to date, highlighting the matinees, which significantly cover the distribution of the offer of this genre, due to the high presence on screen daily.

The television consumption at a general level per person during the first half of 2017 indicates that the consumption of free-to-air TV remains around 3 and a half hours per day per person. The most significant drops in consumption occur in the age groups ranging from 4 to 12 years and those from 13 to 17 years. Also, it is evident that people watch almost an hour more of open television than paid.

The offer of open television during the first half of 2017 was 22,692 hours, which is equivalent to an average of 125 hours per day of television content. With a greater offer, news programs predominate, followed by miscellaneous programs and in third place conversation programs.

Children's programming
During the first half of 2017, the offer of children's programs was 2% of the total programming of open television and is equivalent to 452.6 hours. If in 2010 this offer reached 13%, the steepest drop occurred in 4 years, when in 2014 it only reached 7.6%. In 2016 the annual supply reached 3.1%.

Today, the television consumption of children and adolescents corresponds, to a greater extent, to telenovelas, followed by informative and miscellaneous programs mainly in adult hours.

Cultural programming
The results offered by this report allow us to consolidate the commitment made by the channels in the field of cultural television, whose offer is characterized so far by an increase in reports that portray aspects of the culture and geographical diversity of the country and has concentrated on a mainly family programming.

Programming with cultural content during this period represented 5.5% In the first half of 2017, Televisión Nacional is the channel with the highest cultural offer followed by Canal 13 and in third place by UCVTV.

The evaluation of the offer of cultural programs in this yearbook has considered all the programs that meet the content requirements posed by the Cultural Standard accepted by the H. Council, regardless of the exhibition schedule and the other requirements established in said regulatory framework.

In relation to the contingency of the first half of 2017, and which has had an impact on the usual programming of the television screen, three specific events stand out, such as the political context of the elections, the coverage of forest fires and the participation of the Chilean team in Russia 2017.

In electoral processes, open television is the main means from which Chileans are informed, with the primary elections of presidential candidates as a reference, and where there is a need to know the candidates and their proposals.
