Digitization in open systems

The Fission Software system, installed by Televisa, will allow the television station to share the material, once digitized, to edit, post-produce and transmit it. This will automate operations and unify the flow of information.

For Andrés Galván, CEO of Fission Software de México, today the role of technology providers is to accompany and assist customers in their process of independence from proprietary systems, to achieve self-sufficiency in the integration and growth of their own operating platforms.

"Television and cable companies," he adds, "--, already have the technical know-how to integrate their own solutions, as well as being the ones that best know their needs."

An example of this, says Galván, is the recent installation of the Fission Software solution in local stations and in most of the stations affiliated with Telesistema Mexicano, part of the Televisa Group, which allows videos or commercials to be made without the need to copy the material to tapes to edit or share it.

It is, says the interviewee, "an update made by Televisa in its stations in the interior of the Mexican Republic, with the aim of automating its operations to unify the flow of information and reduce costs. With a system that allows you to share the material once digitized to edit, post-produce and transmit it."

The components of this solution are: Fission Capture Module, Fission Feed Capture Module, Insertion Module and Fission Managment Module, which cover master control automation.

Since there are simple repeater stations that perform only blocking and advertising insertion operations, and others of multiple channels with requirements of non-linear editing, post-production and news, the software had to work on standard hardware with open and scalable technology.

So Rorke Data's 2 Gbit Storage Area Network (SAN)-based fiber-based centralized storage networks were integrated, eliminating copy times and allowing users across departments to manipulate newly edited or recorded video files. In addition, Metadata servers are used to control the traffic of fiber information over Ethernet networks.

Fission can be mounted on computers such as HP servers and is compatible with standard network infrastructure storage, publishing and other peripherals from broadcast equipment manufacturers.

Less expensive

Before having this solution to make a video it was necessary to empty the material to tape, take it to the non-linear editor, redigitalize it, edit it, move it back to tape and redigitialize it on the playout server. Now, with Fission Software, Telesistema Mexicano stations can share material with only:

1. Receive and record a program that was obtained through a satellite feed .

2. Store it in the fiber-based central storage.

3. The material is now available to be transmitted from the master's degree without going through tapes.

In the case of newscasts, this solution can be used to produce notes and have them available to broadcast from sequencers in the studio. That saves wasting time on copying files to tapes.

The same reporters can record with hard drive cameras and only transfer the files to centralized storage, where they are available to be edited from anywhere on the station.

The same advantages can be used for promotions, movies or series, on an open computing platform that allows the integration of all areas of the stations and the flow of materials.

Additionally, as part of the update, non-linear editing software, character generators, sequencers, 3D animation, composition and audio editing were also installed. One of Fission's subsidiaries handled the training.

For Andrés Galván, the future of television production lies in less expensive and simpler solutions. In order to offer a comprehensive service, this company has a very close relationship with storage manufacturers (such as Ciprico and Rorke Data), who showed their products at the Fission booth during the NAB. It also has contact with computing companies such as HP and Dell, of which they are the only workstation beta sites in all of Latin America.
