The BFI was established in 1933 to promote understanding, appreciation and access to film and television culture.
We are the custodians of one of the largest archives in the world and one of the leaders in restoration and preservation. In addition to our archive we manage the National Theatre and The London Film Festival, the BFI cinema and one of the largest libraries dedicated to industry and educational purposes. And that's not all we do. We also produce films and DVDs, publish industry-related books, and offer educational programs. We also have one of the world's largest collections of posters.
70 years after our founding, the BFI continues to promote the development of new audiences who are passionate about good cinema and encouraging new generations to fall in love with it.
We are proud of our experience and knowledge of the industry and the moving image in all its forms. However, we do not let our guard down and are in a continuous construction of our reputation as guardians of past and present films. We are also leaders in cutting-edge technology to promote in young producers an attitude that brings them closer to the legacy and heritage of British cinema.
We hope you enjoy your visit on our website and that it provides you with a greater understanding of what we do.
Amanda Nevill
Director of the BFI
