Penthouse, media technology center

altThe physical infrastructure and the provision of equipment and systems make the Atico center of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana a unique audiovisual laboratory of its kind in Latin America.

TV AND VIDEO

Approximately five years ago the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá, Colombia, under the direction of the Reverend Father Joaquín Sánchez, made the bold decision to build a building equipped with all the latest technological resources that would allow the faculties of Art, Engineering, Architecture, Social Communication, to disseminate knowledge about the use of audiovisual media in the generation of media content.

The project should contemplate state-of-the-art technologies in the processes of production, post-production, storage, content management and its dissemination through different physical and electronic media.

This implied that the entire project would be carried out in HD signals, in different formats including non-comprehension, audio, 5.1, transport systems and switching of signals enabled for 3G, high-speed networks for shared storage management, real-time interconnection of all technical rooms and central management for authorizations and management of virtual spaces by students, according to the academic levels of each faculty and that they would be renewed every six months.

The design of the building and the physical construction plans were carried out under the direction of the architect Octavio Moreno, dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the University, with the advice of WSDG in the acoustic details, SEEL S.A. regarding audiovisual technology and with the general coordination of the Social Communicator Cesar Tulio Ossa, director of the audiovisual center of the university and promoter of the Atico Project.

Areas and resources
The best way to understand the magnitude of the project is to describe the areas that compose it, with their technical resources:

• A double-height television studio (laboratory) with walkable lighting grill with Arri equipment, four Sony HXC100 high definition Switcher cameras with two and a half Banks Sony MVS6000, virtual set, digital audio mixing console, control room where the production area is located, shading and audio integrated in a single space for training 18 students.

• A double-height professional television studio with walkable grill with Arri equipment, four Sony fiber optic cameras 1500, switcher with capacity for production in Stereoscopy with professional control room where the production area, shading, lighting and audio with soundproof booth is located.

• A color correction room with Autodesk Lustre software, with Sony 4K projector and 5.1 M-audio monitoring.

• Control Equipment Room (CER) with Miranda Arrays for audio and video up to 3G, Intercom Telex-RTS arrays, VSN media management and management shared storage servers, historical file on a Sony petasite, passive switching system in Triax, fiber optics, audio and video and Gateway for external network interconnection.

• Two Autodesk training classrooms (Smoke, Flame, Lustre) with 5.1 audio and capacity for 16 students.

• Eight individual Autodesk completion rooms with Flame and Smoke software, with 5.1 audio.

• Three video editing training rooms in programs such as Media Composer, Smoke on MAC, Premier, Final Cut Pro for 24 students.

• 15 Digital design labs with capacity for 16 students, where you train in Maya, Autocad, Adobe suite, solid Edge and similar software.

• An experimental animation laboratory.

• Hypermedial newsroom for news, with a newsroom for 18 students, virtual set for two presenters and a VSN news automation system for news production.

• An animation room with dedicated render farm.

• A double-height audio recording studio with capacity for 20 musicians, with variable acoustics and the possibility of becoming a TV studio with artistic lighting and connection to professional cameras in Triax and F.O. with professional control for recording and chairs for 12 students, with ADAM Stereo and 5.1 monitoring, with D-Control control surface of 48 AVID faders and peripheral equipment such as Lexicon, TC Electronics and SSL among others.

• An audio recording studio with capacity for ten musicians, with professional control and capacity for 12 students.

• A professional mastering and monitoring room.

• A radio studio for eight journalists with professional control and ten chairs for student training

• A studio dedicated to sound effects for video (Foley) with full HD monitoring through an Avid Media Composer and Satellite with control for recording and editing in protools with Adam 5.1 monitoring, with capacity for 10 students

• An acoustics laboratory, for tests and exercises of the students

• Five individual audio editing rooms with Stereo M-audio monitoring to work with protools and Logic software.

• Two audio recording and editing rooms, with independent ISO Booth, with HD video monitoring capability on media composer and satellite for dubbing and voice overs.

• A Film Mixing room with 7.1 Meyer monitoring, Sony HD projection and Avid professional D-Control console, which allows the simultaneous work of two operators handling three protools and a half composer with satellite, designed for Dolby and THX certification.

• Two audio training rooms with independent studio for 14 students, with dynamic participation, where the management of software such as protools, Logic and Sibelius is taught.

• A radio training room with a studio for six journalists, teacher control and capacity for 11 students with dynamic participation.

• Two music production studios with Avid control surfaces and monitoring in 5.1.

• Eight independent video editing rooms equipped with Smoke on MAC, Media Composer and Final Cut and color control surfaces.

• A video editing room with Avid DS software and AJA Kona 3 interface, with color control surface.

• Two intake rooms with five seats each, with the possibility of handling all current audio and video formats, as well as the most used formats a few years ago, in order to convert them into digital format and be manipulated in any of the rooms or studios throughout the building as required

• An auditorium with capacity for 90 people with SONY 2k projection, 5.1 monitoring of Electrovoice and console for live recording VENUE SC48 of AVID and automation of Crestron; by having audio and video connections with the rest of the building, professional recordings can be made with TRIAX and F.O. cameras.

• A creative room with audiovisual facilities, HD projection and the possibility of multiple simultaneous video signals on high definition screens. This space serves as an extension of the auditorium.

Technological Integration
This phase of the project included three fundamental groups, configured as follows:

The first: It would be constituted by the University represented by professors and directors of the different sections involved in the project and who would define the operational scope of each resource.

The second: it corresponded to the implementing company SEEL S.A., which had the responsibility of refining and coordinating the equipment purchase list, preparing all the interconnection and equipment arrangement plans, the assembly, wiring and commissioning of all the systems.

Finally, and not least, it was constituted by the suppliers of equipment and technical solutions, among which sony, Avid, Autodesk, VSN participated with greater participation, whose technical departments and their representative houses in Colombia were present during the development of the project, in countless meetings, contributing and explaining their different technologies and scopes.

The engineer Carolina Fernández, Director of Implementation of SEEL and Julián Castaño, who was responsible for the Javeriana University to monitor the technological implementation, agree that in large part, the success of this type of projects depends on the clarity and speed with which equipment suppliers make known the technical information of the same, which allows to elaborate the final plans of interconnection and the list of equipment and elements to be acquired.

Today, already completed and in operation, the Atico project is surely the most complete of its kind in all of Latin America and will allow to train professionals of very high quality, in the audiovisual field.

Additionally, it is an objective of the University to produce its own educational material such as documentaries, short films, etc. and to continue leading the use and development of new technologies, for the creation and dissemination of media content.
