Samsung is ramping up its efforts in creating patents in the U.S. The company has just invested 25 million dollars (almost 20 million euros) in a division dedicated to this task, based in Washington.
The local newspaper 'Korea Times' says that the new company of the South Korean opened its doors in March. It is the first time that Samsung has decided to open an independent division in the United States dedicated exclusively to the trade and development of patents.
A Samsung spokesperson confirmed the opening of the company to the South Korean newspaper: "Patents are a good source of innovation and we also have to protect our intellectual property, strengthening our business by relating to patents."
Currently, the business focuses on specific patents for OLED and LCD and has completed its first contract with the purchase of patents related to the screen of the Japanese firm Seiko Epson on April 30.
Samsung's technology is one of the most dominant, and it is increasingly focused on sourcing its own patents, which will increase its revenue and reduce its dependence on third parties, as well as potential lawsuits.
An unnamed Samsung source linked to the new division told the Korea Times: "Companies must pay patent licensing fees. Our new organization will be tasked with figuring out which patents are useful and valued by Samsung."
