TVyVideo: What is the main purpose of a camera stabilization system in production?
R.L. Wise:
The main purpose is to free the camera from the physical limitations imposed by current mount systems (tripods, cranes, etc.). This allows the camera to become an integral component of the scene.
TVyV: What are the advantages of using such a system over other equipment for camera movement?
R.L.W.: The steadicam prepares quickly and gives the camera movement a natural flow and, unlike the dolly, changes of plane can be made quickly. Also, the movement of the steadicam is much more natural, it can be incorporated into the planes more easily or used as a point of view.
TVyV: Does camera stabilization save money and time? Why?
R.L.W.: In the hands of a good operator, a steadicam can save a lot to a production by speeding up the shooting process in a variety of ways. It is easier to prepare the drawings and combine many elements in a plane, decreasing the number of camera positions and maintaining the production pace. The interesting thing about all this is that value is also being added to production.
TVyV: What kind of creative possibilities does this team offer?
R.L.W.: Unlimited possibilities. So far, not even all possibilities have been used. You can achieve basically whatever you can imagine.
TVyV: What is the most important factor for the operation?
R.L.W.: Skill and good eye.
TVyV: What do you think about the entry of many different systems into the market?
R.L.W.: For the operator that is an excellent development. The presence of many systems means better quality equipment while keeping costs at a reasonable level.
TVyV: Do you think that any production should have a stabilization system available all the time?
R.L.W.: Yes. Steadicams can enhance any production and the presence of a steadicam on set is now considered normal, whereas, a few years ago, it was only used in a special way.
TVyV: Do you think prior training is important for the operation of these systems? Why?
R.L.W.: Learning to use the equipment is, in itself, very difficult. A class or workshop can make that learning less difficult. The problem with learning alone is that you yourself develop many bad habits that, later on, will be harmful to you; in addition, it is difficult to get rid of these habits. Another advantage of workshops is that it introduces you to peer networks, which is VERY important. 30% of my contracts come from referrals provided by other operators. Steadicam is a "family" trade and one of the best ways to get involved in that family is by attending workshops.
