IFT Information Bank now includes broadcasting

ift, bit,Mexico. The Telecommunications Information Bank, BIT, of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, incorporates into its data catalog two new modules corresponding to services in the broadcasting sector, which present information on Radio Sonora and Televisión Abierta.

Both modules, available in the Data Download section of the BIT, contain detailed information that can be downloaded in open format. With them it is possible to know: the recent evolution and the current state of the provision of sound radio and open television services in Mexico, and the main changes derived from the institute's policies, related to the administration and allocation of spectrum for broadcasting services.

Databases allow queries in which information from the same economic group is combined, for example, it is possible to identify the concessions that this group has, the location of these (at different geographical levels), number of stations that were granted or assigned to that group and those that were ceded to other groups, as well as the evolution of market shares and concentration levels derived from these changes.

Through the use of these bases, the economic groups that make greater use of multiprogramming and the populations that benefit most from this (they have a greater number of programming channels) can be identified, as well as the evolution of market shares and concentration levels resulting from the introduction of channels in multiprogramming.

Among the main elements that are incorporated in each module are the following:

Sound radio service:

19 databases with information for the period 2014-2018 are integrated, with different levels of disaggregation: national, state and geographical areas of provision of the commercial radio service, in which it is possible to consult:

- Coverage of the stations,
- Offer for different uses (commercial, public and social, including community and indigenous),
- Suppliers and economic groups,
- Stations by state, type of content, brand and marketer representative,
- Tenders and concessions,
- Market shares and concentration indices, and
- Operations in the secondary market.

Free-to-air television service:
11 databases with information for the period 2014-2019 are integrated, with different levels of disaggregation: national, state and geographical areas of provision of the open television service, in which it is possible to consult:

- Coverage of transmission channels and programming channels,
- Offer for different uses (commercial, public and social),
- Suppliers and economic groups,
- Programming channels by state,
- Tenders and concessions,
- Market shares and concentration indices, and
- Use of multiprogramming.

The databases were integrated by the team of the Economic Competition Unit of the IFT based on the information generated by different areas of the Institute: Radio Spectrum Unit (available in the Consultation and Pre-Analysis System of Online Broadcasting Coverage), Media and Audiovisual Content Unit, Concessions and Services Unit (available in the Public Registry of Concessions) and the same Unit.

In addition, various sources were used, including information submitted by the concessionaires (available in the RPC), public information contained in Internet pages 3/4Internet sites of radio groups3/4, and information obtained from consultants specialized in media 3/4Mediavyasa and Medios Publicitarios Mexicanos and Market Research INRA, S.C. (market research) 3/4.

This update of the BIT is the result of the IFT's continuous effort to disseminate detailed and updated information on the broadcasting sector in a highly dynamic context, in which there have been structural, regulatory and technological changes that have modified the configuration of the markets, allowed access to new participants and increased the offer of services, for the benefit of audiences.
