Standard for IP?

IP, 4K, streaming and drones, were the protagonists of the version of NAB show 2015, which was framed by the doubts generated by the situation of the dollar against the local currencies of the countries of the region.

By TVyVideo

With some concern but optimistic were the manufacturers of equipment and systems for the broadcast industry for the situation of the Latin market with the revaluation of the dollar against local currencies. They agreed that their channels and distributors in the region should continue to be supported.

And although the situation has caused important projects to be stopped due to the increase in the budget, manufacturers are generating plans and options that allow the development of projects and, above all, supporting their distributors, who are the most affected by the situation, because they lower their profits to the limit to avoid an exaggerated increase in systems and equipment.

"The channels wait to see if the prices go down, but in the end if they need the technology they buy, even if the prices are high. Many times the one who is punished is the distributor who in order to achieve the sale lowers his profits to the minimum. Therefore, our plans are focused on supporting the distributor," said María Claudia Torres of Newtek.

For his part, Leonel da Luz, vice president for Latin America of Grass Valley, said in this regard that "there is no doubt that it has impacted a lot, it is not what we expected, there is a direct impact on the channels, but what we are doing in other areas guarantees us to have oxygen to continue doing business in Latin America. That's why we're creating promotions and looking for the best way to fit the client's budget."

Sony proposes IP standard

As for the technology presented, the work of the manufacturers is concentrated on the development of 4K, in cameras, recording systems, monitoring and workflows. Hand in hand, there is IP technology, in which manufacturers such as Grass Valley, Sony, Ross Video, Image, Cisco, Level 3, among others, are concentrating their research and development.

At the show, Grass Valley and Cisco demonstrated an interoperable live production workflow over INTEROPERABLE IP, from the Cisco booth to the Grass Valley Live Production Booth, managed by Grass Valley's new converged SDN (software-defined network) solution.

This workflow showed how broadcasters can deploy live production over IP, scalable, programmable and advanced IP technologies with minimal delay, no loss, and shows the growing interoperability between providers.

The issue of IP is of such importance to the industry that Sony proposed finding a standard for IP development. Luiz Padilha, Vice President of Sony Professional Solution for Latin America, explained that the idea that the company is leading, aims to find a standard for IP transmission that allows interoperability between the systems of all companies.

The executive acknowledged that this is not an easy task, it is something very complex to achieve because all companies are researching and developing their systems. He made it clear that Sony does not want to impose a standard or take advantage, what they propose is an integration between all existing systems in a work with all companies.

Record number of attendees

A record number of attendees was the 2015 edition of NAB Show, with a registered attendance of 103,042 people. The exhibition featured 1,789 companies covering 1,015,000 net square feet of exhibition space.

"This year, the NAB Show once again demonstrates the power and global reach of the NAB Show brand. We are proud to host the world's premier media technology event," said Dennis Wharton, NAB Executive Vice President of Communications.

Total registered attendees: 103,042

International attendees: 26,489

Countries represented: 164

These numbers become more important when compared to the final attendance of NAB Show 2014, which was 97,915, with 26,367 international attendees. The total exhibition space was 947,000 net square feet.

Another novelty presented by the fair in 2015 was the launch of a version of NAB in Shanghai, in partnership with the National Base of International Trade-International High Tech Cluster Cultural Device, TCDIC, which will be held on December 3 and 4 at the Shangri-la Kerry Hotel, Pudong, Shanghai, China.

Recognition to Cricon

During the cocktail for Latinos held by TVyVideo magazine in partnership with NABShow, the occasion was used to recognize Cricon for having brought more VIP guests to the 2014 version of TecnoTelevisión.

Óscar Flórez, vice president of the Fort Lauderdale-based company, told TVyVideo that they welcomed this recognition. "It was the result of professional work to attract VIP guests to the fair and the response to our work with customers in the region, having a close relationship with staff at all levels, technical, engineers and administrative and managerial."

Having a close relationship with customers has been one of the company's main strategies to stay in Peru, Mexico, Colombia and Panama, its most important markets in integration for broadcast.

That same close relationship they have had with the manufacturing companies they represent. Óscar Flórez explained that Cricon's main focus is integration and each of the companies they represent were chosen with the aim of fulfilling customers, guaranteeing support and quality.

On the expectations for 2015, he commented that they expect to continue growing in operations as they have done in the last two years. To achieve this, they will continue to base their strategy on targeting customer needs and offering solutions for those needs.

With these two focuses and maintaining good relations, they hope to continue in their established markets and grow in other countries where they have a presence, such as Central America and the Caribbean, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia.
