The trends identified by the management of Channel Thirteen on how television is seen are that satellite consumption is increasingly lower, while mobile consumption grows. Therefore, the Channel's strategy revolves around producing content that responds to these demands.
"Today we need to take the step to be a producer of digital content, because the equipment that the Channel has is still traditional television. The reason is not just the scarcity of resources. The target audience, located in the Andean Region of the country, includes remote areas in rural centers, where there is still a high consumption of television and that is why they cannot neglect the traditional screen, "said Catalina Ceballos Carriazo, manager of Canal Trece.
In 2017, the channel began strengthening its digital platform. The website was renewed, in order to have options to have longer content. A next step will be the own channel to host the contents and an application to easily access the contents from mobile devices.
Today, thanks to DTT, the channel has HD signal and some analog signals. It is expected that by 2020 they will be able to have 100% of the signal and all production equipment in HD.
The next step
In 1998 Teveandina was born, the regional channel in charge of covering the southeastern region of the country. In 2001, after a difficult period for the Canal, it was transformed into Canal Trece, for which the image was redesigned and specific programming was created for a niche audience that at that time was not well served, the youth.
"Canal Trece has a focus from its contents on cultural and educational issues, fostering a critical, inclusive and diverse audience. Since the origin of the channel, part of its identity has been the broadcast of music videos, with themes that can be narrated through music, "said Catalina Ceballos Carriazo.
This evolution involved changing the initial scheme and starting to produce in the Canal facilities, something that had not been contemplated in its beginnings. For this they have an engineering team made up of seven professionals.
The engineering department is divided into two segments. The first is that of IT, which supports the development of streaming for the production of digital content and provides everything related to software and hardware computing. The second is tv engineering, which is in charge of broadcasting, transmission, and verifying that the satellite signal with all cable operators runs smoothly.
And since the current dynamics of television are very important for the Channel, they try to always be updated. To train, they have taken advantage of the courses of the European Union with the support of the National Television Authority, ANTV, on Digital TV. In addition to the courses that manufacturers and distributors provide on the technology they use.
When choosing technology, the Channel conducts market studies based on the requirements of each of the areas, to make the best choice between price and quality. Although the channel does not usually continue with a specific brand, in relation to the shared environment they look for brands that are related to avoid operational problems.
Its Director stressed that Canal Trece has planned for 2018 the renewal of its technology so that the entire shared environment of the post-production area is in HD. Today with the equipment that is working the processes have become a bit slow due to obsolescence.
