Colombia. In order to prepare the country for the deployment and massification of 5G technology, MinTIC published the definitive 5G Plan, establishing the path for the development, deployment and operation of this technology in all regions.
For the development of this plan, MinTIC received 216 contributions or comments from 63 actors, including public entities, industry, universities, international organizations, manufacturers and citizens in general.
"Thanks to the contributions of all stakeholders, we were able to make a more solid, structured and adequate plan to the needs and characteristics of the country. We are preparing for the beginning of a new technological era that will reduce download times, improve the speed of Internet browsing, increase the quality of mobile service and facilitate the implementation and use of emerging technologies that will benefit Colombians, "said the Minister of ICT, Sylvia Constaín.
Similarly, the ministry announced the opening of the call to develop the first 5G pilots in the regions of the country, an initial step for the fulfillment of the objectives and lines of action of the plan, with which it will be possible to test 5G technology, identify the best uses, services and applications adapted to the needs of Colombians, as well as the inputs for the technical determination that facilitates the arrival of said technology.
"With these pilots, we will be able to obtain preliminary information that facilitates the design and structuring that enables the deployment of 5G technology, as well as test and encourage a path so that Colombians can access, for example, augmented reality applications that will allow them to enjoy cities, concerts and artists on the other side of the world in real time and with the highest possible quality," the official added.
Finally, the minister pointed out that "5G technology will enable entrepreneurship models never before seen in the country, generating new sources of social and economic development for Colombians."
The spectrum for the testing of 5G technologies will be allocated in the first quarter of 2020, the date from which the pilots will begin to be deployed and operated in some regions of the country.
Those who wish to participate in the call for the development of pilots, may express their interest through the email [email protected] until next January 14, 2020.
