Brazil. GatesAir is preparing Brazilian TV broadcaster Rede VTV, a subsidiary of the SBT network, for the transition to full ISDB-Tb digital television before 2018, the country's analog TV shutdown deadline. As part of a turnkey solution, systems integration company Foccus Digital is deploying a single frequency network (SFN) composed of air-cooled GatesAir Maxiva UAX UHF transmitters.
The current network enables Rede VTV to serve both analog and digital viewers, with GatesAir enabling the multi-channel opportunities of ISDB-Tb DTV with the lowest cost of ownership.
The GatesAir SFN solution synchronizes 31 transmitters of different power levels (up to 50 kW) from the coastal areas of Sao Paulo through the deep interior, with interoperability between satellite and IP microwave platforms for regional distribution. The flexible GatesAir SFN architecture allows Rede VTV to manage ASI, L-Band and IP input sources over the network with significant operational benefit given the complex nature of managing many analog and digital signals over long distances.
Cesar Donato, director of Foccus Digital, noted that GatesAir's SFN architecture "simplifies both the initial deployment and commissioning of the network," which allowed Rede VTV to be on the air quickly with the new transmitters. GatesAir's approach eliminates the intensive transmission software programming associated with competitive SFN solutions to eliminate signal and network overlap across all interference.
Although Brazil has set a national analog TV shutdown for 2018, major Rede VTV coverage cities, such as Campinas and Santos, will shut down analog programming in 2017. Therefore, Foccus Digital designed a turnkey system for hybrid analog recording and ISDB-T programming to prepare them well in advance.
