Discovery Communications, Sony Corporation and Imax Corporation will establish a joint venture to develop the first 24-hour 3D television network in the United States.
The new 3D network will offer high-quality content including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, entertainment films and children's programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Imax and other third-party providers.
Discovery will provide network services, affiliate sales and technical support functions, as well as rights to Discovery's 3D television content and cross-promotion across its portfolio of 13 television networks in the United States. Sony will provide advertising/sponsorship sales support, seek to license television rights to current and future 3D feature films as well as 3D content associated with music and games, and provide cross-promotion at points of sale. Imax will also license television rights to future 3D films, provide promotion through the theaters it owns and operates throughout the United States, and provide a suite of visual enhancements and proprietary proprietary 3D technologies.
The internal governance of the joint venture will be managed by a board of directors composed of members of each of the three companies. Day-to-day operations shall be carried out by a separate staff and executive staff, who shall work under the direction of the Board.
