New Omneon products and updates

The company brings to market its new MediaPort 5320 series with four recording channels, the ProCast CDN for file transport, version 1.1 of the ProXchange transcoding system, and version 2.1 of MediaGrid for active storage.

Omneon MediaPort 5320 series offers up to four channels for HD/SD recording and playback in a compact package of 1-RU. Fully compatible with server systems Spectrum, these MediaPorts offer professional channel density, with all channels available for both recording and play any combination. Using proven technology MPEG-2 encoding, units can be deployed with ease for HD and SD ingest applications, reproduction or hybrids, with the possibility of being quickly reconfigured when needs change.

Material recorded with the MediaPort 5320 can be stored either in MXF (Material eXchange Format) or in QuickTime files, ensuring interoperability with the main solutions of editing, storage, and other production equipment and broadcast. Fully support for HD bitrates from 18 Mb/s to 100 Mb/s (offers the option to choose between 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 chroma sampling), includes all points XDCAM HD operating and the user can select the optimal balance of video quality, required storage and use of resources.

Omneon MediaPort 5220 Series offers full functionality for 5320 series SD, with up to four recording channels and SD playback in the same 1-RU package. These units, supporting MPEG-2 encoding for SD and decoding to rates from 3 Mb/s to 50 Mb/s, are fully upgradeable to the corresponding models of the 5320 family through a simple software update. This offers the broadcasters total protection for your current SD investment without requiring higher expenses for HD until necessary.

Both MediaPort series are available as modules Omneon's MediaDeck, and offer up to four recording channels or HD or SD playback, in any combination, for each MediaDeck platform. With these modules, the MediaDeck can serve as an HD and SD ingest server, a server of HD and SD delay, editing platform, support server, or as another media server that requires moderate storage in a conveniently integrated package.

ProCast CDN file transport machine

Omneon introduces ProCast CDN, a high-performance machine for file transport based on a unique acceleration that allows file transfers to high speeds over WAN (Wide Area Network). With ProCast CDN, the users can send many files over large distances as fast and simple as if shipping were a local transfer. The main technology behind this System was obtained by Omneon with the acquisition of Castify in December 2007. The speed for file transfer reached by ProCast CDN are orders of magnitude greater than FTP transfers and are not affected by distance. By example, a one-hour DV25 file, sent from Los Angeles to New York over a 450 Mb/s connection might take 30 hours via FTP, but with ProCast CDN, the transfer it takes only three minutes. The same file sent from Beijing to New York could take 69 hours via FTP, but it's still taking just three minutes with ProCast CDN.

ProCast CDN is fully integrated with all products for Omneon server and storage (MediaGrid, Spectrum and MediaDeck). Allows peer-to-peer content transfers and from point to point, between systems. Usual applications for ProCast CDN include transporting files from offices regional to the main offices of large chains, transfers between affiliated chains and transfers from post-production houses to clients and broadcasters.

ProXchange transcoding system

Omneon ProXchange version 1.1 is a high-performance transcoding designed for environments where high volumes of media files are handled, in different formats. The ProXchange runs on the Active storage MediaGrid, from Omneon, and takes advantage of the combined storage architecture and processing offered by the MediaGrid system to deliver transcoding scalable and efficient based on grid storage.

ProXchange converts between a variety of formats video and audio, including all formats supported by the Spectrum media server, from Omneon, as well as converts to low resolution format H.264 and, with version 1.1, to video for Microsoft Windows Media VC-1 and Flash Adobe.

It also supports conversion and repackaging between formats (QuickTime and MXF), with preservation exact location of all metadata across all conversions.

MediaGrid Active Storage

Version 2.1 allows for a smaller, more affordable and basic system configuration, suitable for a wider range of facilities, such as local broadcast stations, houses of post-production, and corporate audio and video departments.

Among the features present in version 2.1 of the MediaGrid are the ability to create reservations for storage in such a way that individual users can ensure a minimum amount of storage, adequate FTP to support active workflows in conjunction with third parties servers and a more robust monitoring and reporting system.
