On2 Technologies, supplier of software and solutions for video compression, announced that improved its Flix Engine coding software by adding backup for H.264 video compression standard. The line Flix Engine supports transcoding to H.263 and On2 TrueMotion VP6 compression for the popular FLV format used by Adobe's Flash Player 8 and 9 and adobe's 3GPP format H.263, used in the mobile video industry. On2 will expand further forward support for H.264 in your Flix product line for desktop, servers, and coding-based solutions in browsers.
The announcement accompanies the news on the likely acquisition of Antro Productos Oy by On2, a company that develops a wide portfolio of standards based on video compression solutions, including H.264, H.263 and VC-1. Combined with their own compression schemes of video TrueMotion VP6 and VP7, On2 seek to position itself as the only source of all advanced video compression schemes.
H.264, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, is the next generation in video compression in MPEG-4 standard. H.264 is considered as the successor to MPEG-2, the format used for broadcast, cable and satellite TV. For its part, H.264 is used in high-definition television services, and applications for mobile and portable devices.
On2 TrueMotion codecs go currently in its seventh generation. On2 VP6 is the standard common for video for the internet as a result of its implementation in Adoble Flash Player 8 and 9. ON2 VP7 was recognized with the Frost and Sullivan Award for Innovation as the best codec in the market.
