Compatibility certification for network devices working with any of the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol versions. The certification is granted by the Wi-Fi Alliance and covers 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g networks. A user, using a Wi-Fi certified device, can connect with an access point of any other brand also certified.
However, any Wi-Fi product that uses the same radio frequency (2.4 GHz for 802.11b and 802.11g and 5GHz for 802.11a) can, in theory, communicate with another even if it is not Wi-Fi certified.
