Digital station in use: an experience

Armando Plata began his career as an announcer in Colombia, in 1967, as a commentator on films and music. Today he resides in the U.S. and is considered one of the leading independent broadcasters. TV&Video spoke with him to learn about his experience as the first Hispanic broadcaster to have his own Orban station Audicy to provide international services. Here are their answers.

What basic applications does the Audicy station cover for its work?

First of all, the Audicy station is a blessing from God for those of us who know virtually nothing about technology and computers. Every operation is easy and functional, and is designed with a lot of logic. With Audicy I not only record my voice, but I can produce multichannel projects with music, effects and other voices.

Audicy has 10 channels and a range of Orban and Lexicon effects (considered among the best effects units in the industry), ranging from reverberations and echoes to compressors, noise suppressors and equalizers.

The audio signal is very clean and of great quality. Thanks to Audicy's special processing, the 32 KHz signals have nothing to envy to the 44.1 KHz signals. This allows you to make better use of disk space.

How do you evaluate Audicy's support and capability for audio work for video?

Positively. It's like working on a moviola; that is, you are listening to what you are seeing, in real time. You don't have to wait until the computer loads a program before you can hear something. You can record, listen, edit, cut, delete, move, duplicate, synchronize, with the press of a maximum of one or two buttons.

Audicy does not use a mouse, nor does it have complicated protocols. In addition, you can connect video player recorders of any digital or analog format, from Betacam to homemade VHS machines. And it has several possibilities to apply the time code.

How is the integration of the Audicy into your normal working systems?

Total. Audicy is a large digital cyberstation to which you can add countless functions. From my own recording room, in my home in Hollywood, I can communicate in real time with any recording studio in the United States and the world, through a Telos Zephyr ISDN.

By fiber optics I can send and receive audio signals of very high fidelity in stereo. Any production recorded and mixed on the Audicy can be passed analogously or digitally to CD, DAT, Minidisc, cassette, video or Open Reel.

And what I find most functional is that the information can be archived in various formats, which allows me to send or receive high-quality audio, at 32 or 44.1 Khz, over the Internet. In a short time I plan to establish an Audicy network with my studios in Atlanta and Miami, or with other digital stations to receive or send information directly from hard drives.

What advantages do you see audicy over other similar teams?

Indisputably, speed. Unlike other systems, the functionality of Audicy allows you to carry out any project winning at least 50% or 60% of time. I recently dubbed a documentary about World War II, synchronizing my narration in Spanish exactly with the announcer in English, in less than two and a half hours; and erasing, in addition, all the silences, pauses and breaths. Typically, this is a project that requires six to seven hours of work.

Another advantage is the programming of the effects. I had always wanted to play with the bass of the legendary announcer, my great friend John Gress. Using a Neuman TLM 103 microphone, I recorded my voice on three stereo channels with something like 4 dbs of bass at 125 hz. During mixing, I assigned channel 1 to the left, two to the right, and three to the center.

Then I applied the Orban "Hard Voice" compression effect and a little Bit of Lexicon digital reverb. The result was absolutely magical. I couldn't believe the strength, purity and "fatness" of my voice. My clients in the U.S. and Latin America are delighted.

Finally, I would say that another great advantage is the security that comes from working with one of the most sophisticated and advanced digital audio systems in the world.
