Peru. For 11 years in Provideo, a company dedicated to the maintenance of audiovisual technology in Peru, opened a new line of business in order to offer digitization services, taking advantage of the knowledge and experience in the industry of its managers.
Juan Villanueva, general manager of the company, told TVyVideo+Radio that in Peru there is no culture of digital preservation, so the company has dedicated itself to training and promoting the digitization of files among different companies and entities, although there is no awareness of this work.
"There is ignorance about the digitization process. It is a process that includes cleaning the tapes and reviewing the cassettes before starting the digitization on the machines. It is a work that requires the interest of preserving the audiovisual archive," he said.
He added that in Peru there is no law on archiving or that promotes digitization, but there are institutions such as the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, PUCP, with which they have developed very important digitization projects.
Among the digitization projects that Provideo has advanced, are, in addition to the PUCP, the audiovisual archive of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos de Lima and with Peruvian directors such as Francisco Lombardi, Álvaro Velarde, Daniel Rodríguez, Mario Pozzi Escot, Pili Flores Guerra, Chicho Durant, Fabrizio Aguilar, among others.
Juan Villanueva concluded that "We will continue to try to raise awareness, arduously with a lot of sacrifice and effort, of how important the culture of digital audiovisual preservation is here in Lima and in Peru."
