In 2017, Pay-TV consumption increased in Mexico

Mexico. The increase in the use of internet services through mobile data, the increase in the number of video calls, more speed contracted and the greater number of hours that users watch through pay television, are some of the relevant data that the Third Survey 2017, Users of Telecommunications Services, of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) shows.

The survey allows to know the consumption patterns, levels of satisfaction and experience in the services of: fixed internet, fixed telephony, mobile telephony and pay television, as well as to compare some of these variables between 2016 and 2017.

In terms of satisfaction levels, the survey reveals that users are more satisfied with fixed telephony service: on a scale of 0 to 100, they gave a rating of 74.3 to this service, mobile telephony was given 73.2, and those with lower scores were pay TV 68.4, and fixed internet 67.1. In general, users of telephony (fixed and mobile) and pay TV give more importance to the price they pay for the service than to the quality of them.

Pay TV
Last year the number of users aged 35 and over using this service increased from 3 to 5 hours a day. Compared to 2016, the number of users who use the service more than 5 hours a day increased by 3.9%.
The preferred times for users of this service were from 6:01 pm to 12 am.
Users hired more channels compared to 2016.
For the third survey 2017, 10,644 interviews were conducted throughout the country with users aged 18 and older. The survey period was from September 26 to October 15, 2017.

In the case of fixed internet and pay television services, face-to-face surveys were applied to 5,08 users, with a random sample design based on the 2010 Population and Housing Census of the INEGI; while, for fixed telephony and mobile telephony services, telephone surveys were applied to 2,815 and 2,821 users respectively, with a random sample design based on the National Numbering Plan.

Fixed Internet
The main uses of the service were: sending text messages via WhatsApp (83.7%) entertainment through social networks (77.8%) and watching Youtube videos (70.6%).
The percentage of users over the age of 35 who used the service for their smart TV increased 2.7% compared to 2016.
The percentage of users aged 56 and over who used the service for their mobile phone increased 12.3% compared to 2016. Users mentioned having a higher contracted speed in their fixed internet service compared to last year (equal to or greater than 20 Mbps).
Users aged 18 to 34 were the ones who made the most purchases online.

Fixed telephony
Users aged 18 to 34 made fewer calls to landlines and mobile numbers compared to 2016 (-9.0% and -11.5%, respectively). In contrast, users over the age of 56 increased mobile calls by 3.1%.
Users aged 35 and over increased the number of international long distance calls by 2.4% compared to last year.
Users aged 18 to 34 who reported having fixed internet and/or mobile phone, in addition to their landline, made more video calls through Skype, WhatsApp, Facetime, among others (75.8%).

Mobile
Users aged 18 to 34 increased in 2017 the use of mobile phones to send instant messages via Whatsapp, Skype, etc. by 7.7% compared to the previous year. Those aged 56 and over increased the number of video calls by 14.2% compared to 2016.
In 2017, email use decreased among respondents from 18 to 34 from 85.0% to 70.8%, and from 56.0% to 41.9% among those aged 56 and over.
Regardless of the age group, it was indifferent for users to access the internet through their mobile phone via Wi-Fi and/or mobile data.
Compared to 2016, last year users of all ages used their mobile data more to connect to the internet.
The number of users who used this service to order a taxi increased slightly (1.0%) compared to 2016.
Users used mobile phones more to watch short videos.
In 2017, the percentage of users who made prepaid recharges for amounts from 31 to 100 pesos increased, going from 74.7% to 75.7%
