Mexico. Recently, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) released the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) as of October 2016, which registered an annual growth rate of 3.1%.
During that same period, the Communications Price Index ranked first in terms of low prices with an annual variation of -12.6%, above other segments such as Housing, Alcoholic Beverages and Transport.
The trend in the Communications Price Index was mainly influenced by three factors:
Decrease in mobile phone prices; price stability for fixed telephony, international long distance and fixed Internet, which followed the restructuring of fixed telecommunications service packages in 2014; and the increase in pay-TV prices, which is mainly associated with the depreciation of the peso against the dollar.
Of the 283 generic products that are included in the basic basket of the INPC, the price of mobile phone services was the one that fell the most from October 2015 to October 2016, surpassing other consumer goods such as serrano chili, onion, lemon, LP domestic gas, among others.
