Dielectric supplied the system from broadcast antennas to WNYW and WNBC, which were installed above the Empire State Building (ESB), the tallest in New York City. For more than three years, Dielectric has worked with WNYW and WNBC to develop a solution full on-air broadcast for both stations. The the result of this work is a combined antenna system tailor-made.
The system includes main and backup antennas and a combination system of signals. The main antenna has been installed on the well known ESB needle and backup antenna occupies the mast of the berth of the building. Upon completion in 1931, the ESB originally included facilities at the top of the building in order that the airships would dock and unload their passengers. This Ease was never employed for its original purpose, so which is still known as the mast of the berth.
The challenges of broadcasting from the ESB there are many and not only imply the limitations of the physical space but the potential electrical interactions with other broadcast antennas. Because of these complexities, Dielectric was selected as the main supplier for the combination of channels, transmission line and antenna broadcasting equipment for this project.
The WNYW Combined System 5/WNBC 4 was fully operational in December 2004.
