In the first quarter of 2023, the GDP of Telecommunications and Broadcasting (T&R) had an annual growth of 8.0%, higher than that of the National GDP, which was 3.7%. In the same period, employment in the Telecommunications and Broadcasting sectors grew 7.0%.
IFT
With information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT , published information on GDP and jobs in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors for the first quarter of 2023, as well as figures for the prices of telecommunications services for the first half of June 2023. Below are the main findings:
Prices
When making a comparison between the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) with the Price Index of the Communications Division (IPCOM), which includes the generics of mobile telephony, fixed telephony, fixed internet and fixed service packages, it is necessary that, from the first half of June 2013 to the first half of June 2023, inflation in Mexico was 56.9%, while the IPCOM presented a decrease of 31.5%.
Regarding the last data for which information is available corresponding to the first half of June 2023, of the 12 divisions in which the INPC generics are disaggregated, it stands out that only the Communications division presents an annual price reduction, with a decrease of 3.7 percent (Figure 1).
Within the Communications division, the prices of mobile telephony services (including telephony, internet and short messages) stand out, with an annual decrease of 9.7% in the first half of June 2023. In this way, mobile telephony services are placed as the third product with the greatest negative impact on annual inflation.
According to the ENDUTIH 2022, 11.3% of the total people who did not use the internet indicated that they did not use it due to lack of economic resources, while in 2021 this percentage was 13.9%, a decrease of 2.6 percentage points in just one year. Therefore, the downward trend in the prices of telecommunications services contributes to making these services affordable for more people.
GDP
In the first quarter of 2023, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Telecommunications and Broadcasting showed an annual growth rate of 8.0%, going from 609 billion pesos (constant base prices 2013) in the first quarter of 2022 to 658 billion pesos (constant base prices 2013) in 2023, being higher than the annual increase of the national GDP for this same period that stood at 3.7%.
This rise in GDP in the T&R translated, in turn, into an increase in its share of national GDP, since it represented 3.6% in the first quarter of 2023, being the highest contribution that has been had in the first quarter since 2013.
When analyzing the evolution of this indicator, a growing trend is observed, since it went from having a participation of 1.8% in the first quarter of 2013 to having a contribution of more than 3% in recent years. Thus, in terms of participation with respect to national GDP, the GDP of T&R was only below the contributions of the subsectors of real estate services (11.4%), building (4.2%), central banking (4.0%) and food industry (4.0%).
When taking into account the annual growth of the subsectors in their contribution to GDP, the T&R subsector ranked third with an annual growth of 8.0%, only below the subsectors of passenger land transport and manufacturing of transport equipment, which grew 10.4% and 8.9% respectively.
Jobs
With regard to employment in the TyR sectors, from the first quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2023, it increased 7.0%, from 288,653 employees to 308,858. Of these, 88% of employees in the T&R sectors were concentrated in the Telecommunications sector and 12% in the Broadcasting sector.
Regarding the proportion of employees and employed for both sectors, in the first quarter of 2023, 68% of people employed in the Telecommunications sector were men, while 32% were women, compared to the quarter of 2022, women increased their participation by 2 percentage points. On the other hand, it highlights that in the broadcasting sector 42% of employed persons are women.
Declining prices and increased economic activity in the T&R subsectors contribute to the growth of telecommunications services. Thus, the telecommunications sector in Mexico continues to develop and maintain stable prices for the benefit of users.
