Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) approved granting the Public Broadcasting System (SPR) 24 concessions to use and take advantage of frequency bands of the radio spectrum for public use, for the provision of digital terrestrial television (DTT) service in various locations in 15 states of the Republic.
The SPR requested the concessions under the Annual Program for the Use and Exploitation of Frequency Bands 2021, for which it accredited the requirements provided for in the Federal Law on Telecommunications and Broadcasting (LFTyR), as well as the General Guidelines for the Granting of Concessions issued by the Institute, so the Plenary determined that their granting should be appropriate.
It is important to note that the SPR had accredited since December 2017 the implementation of the mechanisms referred to in the second paragraph of Article 86 of the LFTyR to ensure editorial independence; financial management autonomy; guarantees of citizen participation; clear rules for transparency and accountability; defense of its contents; financing options; full access to technologies and rules for the expression of ideological, ethnic and cultural diversities.
With the 24 concessions, the SPR will expand its coverage to provide audiovisual content broadcasting services in more states of the Republic with the aim of contributing to the social function of strengthening national integrity and improving forms of human coexistence, by transmitting programming of a cultural nature and of social interest to society.
Likewise, in terms of its guiding principles and attributions, it will provide the digital terrestrial television service with contents that promote national integration, educational, cultural and civic training, equality between women and men, the dissemination of impartial, objective, timely and truthful information of national and international events and give space to works of independent production, as well as the expression of the diversity and plurality of ideas and opinions that strengthen the democratic life of society.
