MTC has granted 214 new radio and TV licenses

Peru. So far this year, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, granted 214 new authorizations to provide the broadcasting service nationwide. Among them, 148 allow to provide the service in radios and 66 are destined to broadcast their signal on television.

"More than 75% of districts in Peru have FM radio coverage and more than half with television service. In addition, the number of authorized broadcasting stations increased by 4% compared to 2018," said mariella Carrasco, director general of Telecommunications Authorizations at the MTC.

The authorizations were granted in more than 20 departments of the country and allow broadcasters to provide the service for ten years, to give citizens the possibility of being informed of current news in the country.

"With the stations authorized in the FM band during 2019, it benefits more than one million people from 184 districts, who will have a greater variety of television and radio programming," said Mariella Carrasco.

The official of the General Directorate of Authorizations in Communications (DGAT) added that "with the stations authorized in the VHF band during 2019, 59 districts will benefit, which favors more than 400 thousand people."

According to DGAT figures, the MTC also approved 104 channeling and frequency assignment plans: 74 in the FM band, 25 in the VHF and UHF band; and five canalization plans in localities of the Cusco, Huánuco and Ucayali region.

The channeling establishes the frequencies for the radio and television service that can be assigned in a certain locality and band, according to certain technical parameters with which the broadcasting stations must operate, in order to avoid interference.

Finally, so far this year, 78% of the total authorizations correspond to broadcasting services for commercial purposes, 21% to broadcasting services with an educational objective and 1% are destined for community purposes.
