Brazil. The National Telecommunications Agency, Anatel, carried out between September 17 and 19, a major surveillance operation, in 11 states, with equipment distributors and telecommunications product companies, in which they sealed and confiscated a total of 58.7 thousand unapproved and uncertified equipment, according to the final balance of the operation.
By Tuesday the 17th, 23,000 products had been sealed. The main types of irregular products found were: optical equipment, antennas, metal cables and TV boxes.
The largest seizures occurred in four states: Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo. In Pernambuco 30.3 thousand equipment were sealed and seized, in Rio Grande do Sul 12.9 thousand products were seized, in Santa Catarina there were 12.6 thousand equipment and in São Paulo there were 2.7 thousand products.
The actions involved 55 inspectors divided into 20 teams. Anatel teams inspected 52 addresses. The inspectors worked in the southern states (Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) and southeast (São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo), Amazonas, Goiás, Pernambuco, Piauí and Tocantins. To support the field teams, coordinate the work and consolidate the results, a Situation Room was installed in Brasilia (DF), with seven Anatel servers. The operation was based on complaints received by the Agency.
Fight against piracy
The operation is part of the Anti-Piracy Action Plan. The Plan was created by Anatel to combat the marketing of non-approved telecommunications products, in order to protect consumers and users of telecommunications networks.
Irregular products affect the quality of service and pose a threat to health and human safety due to the use of low-quality materials that may contain toxic components.
These products are not subject to mechanical and electrical testing or electromagnetic radiation emission limits and may interfere with other services, including critical operation, such as aeronautical communications.
Combating the marketing of non-approved products also contributes to competition in the telecommunications products market between manufacturers, distributors, suppliers and importers.
Based on the evaluations, the Agency institutes administrative procedures that may result in sanctions for companies.
