TV continues as a very relevant factor: Catalina Parot

Chile. For television there is no expiration date, even when the world is exposed to a bombardment of new trends and facilities to access countless content. The conviction is held by the president of the National Television Council (CNTV), Catalina Parot, who was in recent days visiting Talca for the delivery of six new concessions to companies in the region.

On the occasion, four companies formally received certification to begin operating channels in Talca, Curicó and Linares. All are digital concessions, in accordance with the provisions of Law 20,750 that introduces digital terrestrial television.

"These new channels to which the concessions were delivered, plus those that will come in the next contest are all of a digital nature and in relation to the open television channels an important effort is being made by the industry and we already have, for example, that Canal 13 is digitized in the main regions of the country, "- Parot spoke about the progress made in terms of the migration of signals made so far in the Maule.

Television vs. Streaming
With the emergence and consolidation of the internet, there are those who have predicted the end of traditional media. Now, with the rise of streaming, debates about the future of television are resurfacing. This same market is becoming increasingly competitive, since platforms such as the very popular Netflix will be joined by Disney soon.

Despite this, the traditional medium still has an important place in the community, according to Parot.

How do you see the future of digital television considering that there is now streaming?
"I think there's a lot of myth when you say that television is going to die and be replaced by this trend of technological convergence. That is not the case. Our surveys tell us that 90% of people are informed and entertained by open television and that, even when they have cable, they often have it, they watch open television. I don't think there's going to be a disappearance from television. Yes, there is a change in the industry model, but in terms of people's perception, television continues to remain a very relevant actor."

Regional momentum
From the CNTV there are funds to encourage production. There are even regional financing lines. In this year's contest from Maule there were 10 applications.

"We believe that through the dissemination of the importance of this fund we are making a great effort so that all actors understand that this is a very profitable investment made by the State, because this industry is robot-proof. Creativity, imagination, dreams, stories are not easy to replace. That requires qualities that the human being has and that can be developed and there is a lot of talent in the region as well. We have been making an effort to spread the importance of this fund, in the effect it produces on the generation of employment in the country and we hope that this year will be reflected in the increase in the budget."

How to ensure that productions are not diluted?
"What we have done to attract funds is to define that in any category, whether historical, fiction or children's films, etc., a co-production can be established that contributes funds apart from those provided by the CNTV. In that sense, we are also making an effort in the search for partners to co-produce these regional audiovisual projects. In the search for these co-financings outside the country, the awarded projects I will take to Cannes this year to present them to seek co-financing with actors in the audiovisual industry that need content. We are going to do a job there of partnering with those producers so that projects that are born small have a global reach."

News
The president of the CNTV announced that agreements are in process for a new interpretation of the law that allows companies that provide cable service to incorporate the production of regions into their programming.

There has been on the part of the industry, as Parot said, willingness to formalize this obligation that they have to carry at least four regional, local and local community channels in their grills, "but this provided that there is technological viability and paying the concessionaire the connection".

In the coming days, the working table on this issue will begin to work and they believe that the proposal can be finalized in the coming months.
