Two of Chile's most recognized broadcast networks, Televisión Nacional de Chile (TVN) and Canal 13 de la Universidad Católica (UCTV), marked a milestone in Chilean television when they produced the results of the elections in real time using Viz graphics systems| Virtual Studio, Viz| Trio and Viz| Content Pilot, during the electoral monitoring for president of the country and parliament. The amount of information gathered was enormous, involving more than 450 candidates in 60 districts.
"Other networks in Chile faced strong competition from TVN and UCTV," explained Pablo Goldszeft, commercial manager for Latin America at Vizrt--. When comparing UCTV and TVN with other Chilean networks, the latter produced some static graphics and did not have the possibility of generating results in real time, which is the essence of dynamic electoral coverage, and which we at Vizrt consider a crucial part of the coverage of the elections. UCTV and TVN are able to illustrate the information at the moment it is produced thanks to Viz| Trio and Viz| Content Pilot. The information was displayed in every possible graphic expression, to offer viewers a better understanding of the statistical information and facilitate its analysis."
The use of virtual sets and real-time graphics in Chile's two most recognized networks was one of Vizrt's many deployments in electoral coverage. Vizrt's solutions were widely used in the recent U.S. presidential election by ABC, CBS, CNN News and Fox News Channel — four of the country's top five networks--. Additionally, Vizrt's HD and SD graphics systems are used by approximately 30 broadcast and production companies for live applications such as news, sports and entertainment events, special event production and election coverage.
In Chile, TVN, the country's largest network, has owned Vizrt's virtual studio software, running on an SGI Onyx, since 1997. Since that same year he has disseminated sports programs, special events and magazines making use of the virtual set system. For the elections at the end of the year, TVN deployed a new version of the Viz studio| Virtual in order to present the electoral results in real time, using graphics such as cakes, bars and images of the candidates. The virtual studio is controlled by Viz| Content Pilot for content management and control software. In the creation of graphics, TVN used Viz| Real-time trio with the 3D character generator to graph thirds of the screen, over-the-shoulder shots and updated graphics in real time. Both virtual studio and graphics systems were fed directly by official sources of information and TVN databases built for election monitoring.
UCTV also employed Viz| Content Pilot and Viz| Trio in a scenario similar to that of TVN for its electoral coverage. UCTV had employed Viz| Virtual Studio recently on a sports program that highlighted the results of weekend football matches. After using Viz| Virtual Studio, the show has been at the top of the rating in its time slot. During the program, a news anchor remained on the virtual set , and in the background were presented the graphs relating to the positions of the teams, videos and more. One effect employed by UCTV is to simulate that the news anchor is standing in the stadium, live, and then walking back to the virtual set . In addition to the virtual sets , UCTV used Curious World Maps to present the electoral counts in each region. When a news anchor discussed the results in a region, the information was extracted from the map.
UCTV recently purchased three licenses from Viz| Trio and Viz| Vizrt's Content Pilot, which was integrated with Avid's iNEWS news system.
