Colombia. ICT Minister Sandra Urrutia said that small Internet service providers are great allies to enhance the reach of fiber optics with a view to ensuring that digital connectivity can reach remote regions of Colombia.
"One of the possibilities is precisely what already exists, which are the Internet community or the small Internet providers that already have fiber optics in the regions and from the needs of their communities provide the service; This is possible," said the minister of the ministry.
The Minister highlighted the articulating work that the ICT Ministry has led with different actors in the sector to, through the efficient use of different technologies, achieve the goal of connecting 85% of the country.
"We have worked with companies that today already have fiber optics such as EPM and Emcali, throughout the country there are public operators that already have the infrastructure and we are consolidating them to make that great neutral network that we dream for Colombia a reality; we know that community Internet providers can bring the service to every home," he explained.
Another of the actions led by the entity in the matter is the use of the transmission infrastructure of television channels. As a result, it is the first connectivity pilot developed together with the RTVC Public Media System to connect rural schools in Cundinamarca.
On the other hand, multilateral organizations such as the World Bank and the Development Bank of Latin America -CAF, are part of the instances that work hand in hand with the ICT Ministry to bring digital connectivity to remote areas of the country such as the Amazon.
