Peru. Two months after the authorization granted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, MTC, for the implementation of 5G for mobile services and fixed wireless Internet, there are more than 10,000 users who use the aforementioned technology, according to information provided by the operators.
Likewise, the MTC carried out speed tests in different parts of the capital that already have 5G coverage and with different terminals, verifying that, compared to 4G technology, the speed of 5G in its initial authorized deployment shows speeds higher, on average, by three times.
The tests carried out by the General Directorate of Programs and Projects in Communications were carried out in the last days of April and the first week of May in the districts of Surquillo, San Isidro, La Victoria, Lince and San Borja.
The initial implementation of 5G under the NSA standard in mobile services will be carried out in the provinces of Ica, Trujillo, Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cañete, Callao and Lima. To date, there are already the first antennas deployed in Lima, Chiclayo, Arequipa and Trujillo. That will increase progressively as determined by operators based on their business expansion plans.
"Authorizing the initial deployment of 5G has been an important milestone in the telecommunications sector. There is no digital transformation possible without greater and better capacity in wireless networks. Now it is time to advance in the beginning of the bidding of the bands, this will allow the technology to reach its maximum potential in 2022, "said the Deputy Minister of Communications, Diego Carrillo.
It should be noted that, in March and April, in order to continue with the deployment of 5G technology in the country, the MTC authorized telecommunications operators to implement 5G technology for wireless fixed Internet services and mobile services, under the NSA standard.
New competition for 5G
Through Supreme Decree No. 018-2021-MTC, published in the Official Gazette El Peruano, the regulatory framework for conducting frequency band competitions conducted by MTC was strengthened, guaranteeing a transparent process. In addition, it will allow shorter deadlines compared to other modalities by having a procedure designed specifically for the telecommunications sector.
This is aligned with how spectrum tenders are developed in other countries in the region, including Chile, Colombia and Mexico, where they are conducted by specialized entities in the telecommunications sector.
Under this regulatory framework, the MTC will conduct the tender for the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz frequency bands, which will promote the definitive deployment of 5G technology in our country and commit an investment estimated to exceed S/ 5 billion in telecommunications infrastructure.
"The economic reactivation will require the adoption of new technologies such as 5G. Several studies estimate that this technology will contribute to increasing GDP by up to 1% by 2030 and our country requires that this happen with transparent procedures and in adequate deadlines," Carrillo added.
Likewise, the published standard has introduced a new mechanism for the temporary allocation of radio spectrum for the promotion of pilot projects, which seek to promote innovation, research and development of initiatives related to new digital services. Among them 5G, to develop use cases that accelerate the adoption of the technology and whose promotion window will be held in the second half of the year.
